So a Roth 401K is post tax contributions and a traditional 401K is pre tax contributions. There are pros and cons to both.

401K Roth - max contribution allowed in 2024 is $7,000

Pros: any contributions you make you can withdraw with no penalty.

Cons: any capital gains you make from those contributions you can withdraw but with a tax and penalty

Traditional 401K - max contributions allowed in 2024 is $23,000

Pros: any contribution is pre tax and an incentive for pretax contributions is to lower you tax liability (meaning you owe less tax when you file your return)

Cons: you cannot draw any contributions or capital gains without penalties or interest until 59 and a half years old
