This conversation is exactly what I’m worried about once these dudes hang it up. The future is not looking too promising in my opinion.

I miss when artists were a lil more ambitious.

i'm not stressing too much about this cuz Lana is still here.

No incentive. Streaming killed that.
Edit: probably more than just streaming but that was the catalyst

you make a point OVO Steve

Yeah… we really witnessed a crazy era that imo won’t be matched anytime soon. The excitement of the genre generally is like 5% of what it was in the 2000s and particularly the early/mid 2010s

The landscape is changing
I think that still opens the possibility of something new, fresh and exciting in the future
But as far as longevity, i don’t know if it’s true or not but shelf life seems to be exponentially decreasing as far as popular musicians, or maybe it’s our brains have collectively changed so much in the social media era that music has to be this way to fit our new mental capacities, as far as marketability and interest goes

True. Back then you really had to put in work, throw your demo tapes out there, get a nod from an OG if you could, really grind your way to prominence. The barrier to entry is very low now.

All it takes really is a couple of youngbloods who are hungry and care about the craft to reach a big enough platform but I'm hoping it's not too late

Dude it’s almost non existent… and there’s nothing anyone can do about it because the labels eat it up… ice spice dropping poopy bars selling more than a healthy percentage of artist in the game right now. We are cooked.

the way we consume music has changed for the most part
there's also the tiktokification/reel/shorts etc
i guess vine was the precursor
i know y’all heard “there are no more megastars” convo
Aside from sports, pretty much all entertainment is cooked right now lmao

Is it a quality thing?
Or an accessibility thing?
Or just longevity of any given act/program?
What is the actual problem?
in yalls opinion

Quality + spectacle + ability to captivate

Yeah labels do not give a single f***, they will back any artist as long as the fentanyl bars are profitable. It's really up to the people.
Ice Spice talmbout she listened to tpab in high school and then sounding like a German fetish video every time she rap is cray-z
Quality + spectacle + ability to captivate
I think we're used to so many spectacles because we have access to them that they don't captivate us anymore

Shoutout to Ice Spice though don't get it twisted she got a few

One good thing to come out of it is that Hollywood stars are no longer treated like some deities. That s*** was irritating
Quality + spectacle + ability to captivate
Ability to captivate is huge because everyone’s attention span is about the equivalent of a squirrel these days so it’s always about fast. Not good.
Hence why tik tok, YouTube shorts, etc exist and not only exist but thrive lol.

Accessibility
You can’t sculpt a cultural mythology anymore
Social Media has both exposed every possible interest niche and every flaw of an individual
