Budden’s been saying this for a long time but Drake’s problem is that he thinks bc all of his stats and records would have you think he’s bigger than rap, so he thinks he’s just entitled to the title of best rapper. But it doesn’t work like that.

the streaming numbers have fried his brain

Beyond just typical Stan s***, I think people were so polarized by the Kendrick/Drake beef because they both represent different ideals of what’s important in HipHop. Like they’re both representations of the way people think.

Yeah and in hindsight, that King’s Dead verse as well. After that reference dropped, I was wondering how I didn’t notice before.

Yea my brother and I theorized that Dot wrote that s*** when it dropped it’s just way too similar to Kendrick’s style

This clash of ideals has been going on since the beginning of hip-hop. Mainstream/corporate vs underground/streets

Imo there is room for both but you gotta know and accept which lane you’re in

And that was drakes biggest misstep

i know the daughter thing hasn’t been confirmed but i’m re-listening to MTG and just finally picked up what kendrick was referring to w/ the “you’ve got a gift to change the world” line

it’s a direct continuation to when he said “drake should be at your eleventh birthday singing poems with you”. the delivery on that line makes me think he’s referring to her poems

so if it’s true it means kendrick met his daughter, visited her birthday party, read some of her work, and was moved by it

i haven’t seen anyone else pick up on the poetry/gift line. MTG is so interesting it’s a shame it got buried by the biggest diss song ever

  • Are you finally ready to play “Have You Ever?”, let’s see
Have you ever thought that OVO was working for me?

Imagine if we one day get a beef dvd 3 hours long about just this beef with interviews all about what was going on behind the scenes

I just want to know Drake's initial reaction to MTG. Would love to have been a fly on that wall.

Drake is the progressive vision for rap. Global, with success determined by quantified quotas. Embracing the new streaming model and playing it like a game, using all sounds and genres as tools with rap being just one of them

Kendrick is the conservative model. He doesn’t want to be a new exciting thing, he wants to emulate the greatness of the legends that inspired him. He reveres the traditions of the rappers who paved the way for him and uses his music to get people to revere them too. He’s holding onto a vision of rap that he knows is fading but uses that to his advantage and knows that he can stand out because of it. Drake thinks in the new globalized streaming world, the GOAT is simply whoever is at the top of the charts, but Kendrick still believes in the traditional idea of “the rap game”.

If Kendrick doesn't drop an album within the next 60 seconds, Drake won.
