Well I had an aunt (RIP) who transitioned while we were kids and pretty much everything he described in that song was what my thoughts were like growing up around the subject.

He describes the auntie he once knew. With so much love, respect and care i might add! It isn’t transphobic in that it’s denying his identity, it’s a story and snapshot.

‘My auntie is a man now’ is what kendrick felt as a kid when he saw what happened, it’s in real time. He describes the signs, how people treated his auntie, how his attitudes grew and how when his aunties kid also became trans, he took what he learnt and was there for them. He goes from misgendering to using the correct pronouns.

as the preacher tells his cousin the world is an abomination because of lgbt people, he gets up in church and tells the preacher that he chooses his uncle & cousin over religion and his cousin smiles back at him and forgives his ignorance as a child its sincere, thoughtful and sweet.
