I personally only see an album as “critic bait” if it is making choices that feel unnatural and “wrong” for the record, but it will be more likely to be seen as “progressive” or “revolutionary” as a result.
Like, if a rap song is about one thing, and then it suddenly swerves into another, more “important” thing for like 8 bars, and then it goes back to status quo after that, then I could see that one part being seen as “critic bait” even if that’s not how it was intended.
I personally don’t think Ken is critic bait tho, because he is genuine about his work, as far as I can tell. He talks about “important” topics and uses eclectic choices with flows and production, but it all feels natural.

For real, the progress Kendrick made over the course of the album, both mentally and sonically, was really cool and inspiring.
It was like seeing him grow and shift and change and do all these uncomfortable things right in front of you, inspiring you to try to do the same to get to that better place.
I love this album

Personal perspective or not, I still see those songs I listed as either virtue signaling songs or album sellers and could've been replaced. A lot of the messaging in these songs I was able to compartmentalize when I was 8 and the soundscape isn't interesting enough on these songs to justify for me
