Bro this is so interesting to hear from a native perspective cuz on the east coast we were constantly fed the narrative that The Game was responsible for the West Coast’s resurgence.

Could you elaborate more on how the Game f***ed things up for the west? This is the first time I’m hearing of this

I'll give the full run down, from then to now. Long post but this is basically the archive of modern West Coast

Game f***ed it up business wise - he was too "schizo" to deal with the labels even lashing out to Eminem and Dr. Dre for dumb reason and his beef with 50 that everyone agrees even the West that it was dumb and unnecessary that f***ed up some good connects to East Coast.

And Dre n 50 was part of the 80 percent of game success so he cut his own legs off for basically no reason. Little bit to Em as well which he also beefs with after 50 lol.

So Dre for a bit stopped working with new talent after Game and thats when he fell really behind the scenes - so it cut a major source of power for LA off.

Then relatively at the same time (and i can speak on this part way deeper since im from there and my family has some connect in bay music) you have the Hyphy movement in the Bay, but then our main leading act ends up dying only after 1 single major album. Everyone else was pulling behind him such as Keak Da Sneak, The Federation, Mistah Fab etc. which Mac had multiple mainstream hits and in turn it gave a lot of other artists 1 or two mainstream hits as well such as the names mentioned. But him dying took away the Bays major outside connect, and it created a riff with LA where we felt like LA was playa hating and "showed their ass" to us after Mac Dre died - which is where our state unity split happened on top of it which basically boxes the Bay out all the way. From the mainstream with Mac dying, and then boxed out stateside with our rift with LA.

Mac Dre (and the artists that were suppose to follow after Mac in the Bay) and The Game (and the artists that were suppose to follow after Game in LA) were suppose to be the new West Coast after we were quiet for a few years after 2Pac dying with only Dr. Dre making real noise with 2001 and Em. While E40 would have a mainstream album success and/or hit song every now and then, same for Snoop Dogg.

The Game debut early in 2004, Mac Dre dies late 2004. E40 carries the main torch of the Hyphy movement for a few more years mainstream wise before it fully fizzles out, and Game + Snoop are the real things left carrying LA too for a few years. Which then late 2000s is when all 3 are on their last tank of gas mainstream wise.

But the death of Mac Dre boxed the Bay out, and the mess Game created boxed LA out. We lost all our main connects to "the outside world".

Bayarea lost its main mascot which we havent had a nationwide new Rapper since the early to mid 1990s beforehand that was literally starting a new industry - and LA loses connects and Dre pulls back due to Game's mess and unpredictable behavior, in turn also losing their legacy and outside help. Which, LA also hasnt had a new nationwide Rapper since the mid to late 1990s beforehand.

I give respect to Game, but everyone knows his own bullshit and being unpredictable hurt his career major - but it also made Dre pull out and go fully behind the scenes in music - and the beef with 50 and Eminem, two national juggernauts with huge regional pride, also f***ed up the outside connects.

And that's how we end up with the West being a literal ghostown and it's worst phase ever. With Game, Snoop and E40 trying to keep the heart monitor from flat-lining - and no major industry people nor major labels didn't want to hear anything from us besides if it was Dr. Dre with Detox due to all the investment with Mac Dre and also the investment with Game falling out. Basically losing two major investments back to back on top of it, making it hurt worse for industry business people.

    • BUT 🚨

Then leads little independent labels and kids stuck on the internet to slowly figure something out planting seeds since the mid to late 2000s that cultivated in the 2010s. 2010 literally, to be precised, with YG's Toot it and Boot (Tyga also happens round this time, but Rack City is 2011) and it being the first national hit from a new West Coast artist literally since Mac Dre and The Game. But then YG gets put on the backburner for a few more years again. Which leads to Oddfuture starting up on the internet side in 2010/2011. Nipsey putting in the most work locally along with Jay Rock with a couple cool moments here and there nationally, but a lot of big s*** in the state. AND THEN finally Kendrick (which Jay Rock fought a lot for Kendrick and the only nigga with real pull at the time in the state) happens. KLEP that does good locally, Overly Dedicated mixtape that makes some good noise on the internet - and then while working on Section 80 he luckily gets a few viral freestyles and loosies such as Look Out for Detox, ADHD single & the Kanye Monster freestyle. That THEN FINALLY gets us our mainstream connect fully back with S80, that THEN becomes actuallly real and fully stable with Good Kid Maad City.

Aftermath and their parent company sees the viral tracks and freestyles, plus a good word from the new Jay-Z signee JCole and local legend Jay Rock, makes Aftermath keep the lights on for TDE during S80 when everything was about to literally fall apart. And then Aftermath fully jumps on board and takes over half of Kendrick Lamar's career with GKMC that bring us all the way back into the mainstream with an established stable & solid connect nationwide, FINALLY, once again.

Which then further boosts and gets other CA artists taken more seriously again with S80 and GKMC. Such as Dom Kennedy and his huge classic mixtape the Yellow Album, YG no longer being see as a "cute" one hit wonder due to his mixtape run of Just Re'd Up 2 and 4Hunnid Degreez, Bayarea's Loverance song Beat the P**** Up major hit & Tyga's Rack City massive hit. While alongside got Oddfuture blowing up online year after year - the great 2010 to 2013 period that brings back to life a coast the rest of the nation thinks is dead.

And last but not least Nipsey Hussle, who does get bigger a few years later, basically picks up the Jay Rock torch of going hard af locally stateside and his community that see's its flowers grow over time. With eventually a few mainstream hits and a mainstream huge album after his huge $100 mixtape few years prior happens. Which, sadly, the nationwide mainstream success happened for him right before his death, but he is still very important.

And that is how you get the West Coast falling, being dead, and then it's resurrection

Listened to meet the grahams just now and I am still taken aback by it.
It’s so well put together and succinct, while at the same time having so much humanity in it. It says all it has to say so eloquently, and in a way that makes you believe it and believe that Kendrick believes it.
It’s really just a masterpiece. I barely listen to it because of how dark it is, but when you’re in that kinda angry and dark place it’s really cathartic and nice to hear.

If Game played i think it would have looked a decent diff

And if Mac Dre lived on top of Game not making messes i think it would have been a whole lot different - those two together on top of LA n Bay still being connected (which Kendrick has been slowly repairing the broken string for years now btw, another reason why that nigga is held so down out here by the WHOLE state) plus everything that was in the piepline right behind based off their names and success would have been a whole take over.

People also forget that NY and CA was still licking their wounds and f***ed up over both 2Pac and Biggie (which in a similar f***ed up so much for both states too and all the s*** in the pipeline that was depending on and following behind in them) into even the early 2000s. GUnit with Game on it was seen as unity and repairing for both coasts. Which worked (for a just a year 💀). Which actaully worked with the unity that Dr. Dre's The Firm of Nas, Foxy, AZ and Cormega was trying to do but sadly failed in the end, but that spirit reignited with GUnit full.

So when the beef happened with them two it re-soured a whole lot of grapes again and brought back up biggie n pac beef wounds. It pissed off NY and made them stop really f***in with us for a while when GUnit brought that bridge close.

And it pissed off CA feeling like the first east coast nigga we really embrace ends up like this, which makes us stop f***in with NY like that for a while too. Besides Wu Tang and DMX, 50 Cent was the third only NY nigga to be really blasted like that out in CA, and some west industry and cilvian people got mad that the one time we do "bring in" an east coaster this happens. Then other west industry and cilvian people being mad at just Game for f***in up this new east n west unity and the new chance for West to go national again. Which part of going national then, you had to be good or at least cool with NY. Which uh Game f***ed up.

And then Game's messy ass tyrannical path wasnt done there f***in up the west n east new found partner connect, he also THEN STARTS BEEF WITH THE BIGGEST RAPPER OF ALL - EMINEM. Which is pissing off all white majors and all of white America - especially since Em also helped out with his debut album a lot as well. AND it was yet AGAIN another beef for basically no reason, just like his beef with 50, on top of it. So there was no defending him nor any outs or benefit of the doubt lmao. Just stupid.

He F***ED UP the "streets", then goers and F***S UP MIDDLE AND CORPORATE AMERICA. Which goes deeper into how he f***ed up the West's connect from NY to regular America, and how no one wanted to hear nothing from us unless it Dre's Detox or if E40/Snoop has a dope song once in a while. No wanted to hear us, we werent getting NY radio, and we werent getting invited to white corporate aka the PARENT labels and majors

And also why Game couldnt really pop-"pop" like that anymore after his 2nd album. So he also f***ed himself over in turns of being a huge major big dog

Bro was/is a bomb with no owner. A Pitbull without a master. And f***ed everyone (and everything) up - including himself 💀💀
