Both can be true. I'm only speaking on influence with Jeezy and Wayne. Dipset hype fizzled out but they were both going strong. F*** ebro tho
Dipset hype fizzled out due to stuff like infighting, arrests and Juelz d*** problems.
But it’s not like Wayne and Jeezy just got here and we immediately dropped them niggas and started f***ing with him it was a gradual thing.
And also as far as southern rappers T.I. was the first one to make a mark on the East Coast during the 2000s because of his hits and Pharrell kept calling him the Jay Z of the South people forget that
As a NYer that’s not totally true. Dipset was still heavy over here and Dipset is the reason we started f***in with Wayne cuz Juelz was doing collabs with him circa 05.
Our true downfall started during the blog era when Ebro outright refused to give any of our up and comers radio play because they didn’t have big names.
And this is not me talking out my ass my boy who interned at Hot97 during this era can confirm that Ebro wasn’t tryna give Rocky and Joey Badass their flowers but was quick to play Atlanta trap
Charlamagne or Envy don't get this type of smoke from the general public
The song in GNX trailer >>> every song on here
Brazy
that song on the trailer >>> anything on MDL
Charlamagne or Envy don't get this type of smoke from the general public
Charlemagne and Envy weren’t the gatekeepers that Hot97 was. I can tell you straight up as long as I can remember Power 105 was always the #2 radio station up here we ain’t give a f*** about that s*** we wanted to go to Summer Jam bro lol
My main gripe with other NYers is that we got the most to say about every other region's sound but we left our guys dead in the water either due to hate or some other s***.
When Kendrick & Rocky were coming up at the same time, LA embraced Kendrick while a lot of our OGs was hating on Rocky for not sounding like Dipset or some s*** lol
Yet at the same time our OGs and Gatekeepers wouldn't give Joey Badass and the beast coast niggas any play or motion because their "names" weren't big enough so they had to run to the internet to get love
After Pop Smoke got killed the Brooklyn drill scene just devolved into niggas doing Christian Bale's Batman voice while ignoring the other elements of what made Pop stand out.
And that's not even getting into niggas not acknowledging the lesser known acts like MIKE
Proud NYer for life but where we at in rap is completely our own fault due to ego and hubris lol
agreed mike should be way bigger
there’s some mike songs that should be on the radio lmaoo he got some hooks on him

Oh yeah nah it definitely wasn't immediate. Cam and Vado def extended that dipset hype into the blog era a little bit too. I remember hearing Hey Muma being played in barber shops and s*** over there

And also to add to this point Power 105 was known for a lot of gossipy bullshit more so than breaking new artists
A good conversation to have is how salty some NY rappers and figures over there have been over Kendrick success since Control dropped.
You see how hard some of them backed Drake at first?
And how quiet they got once May 5th hit?

Hot still an independent radio station, that's where a lot of sense that what Ebro was talking came from. Y'all still had new artists pushed through Rosenberg on Real Late. Just not on prime radio through the 2010s
Also I'm sure acts like majority of the beast coast, A Boogie, Young Ma, etc got to be on the Summer Jam stage

I spoke on this in the beef thread. Part of it is due to the control verse but also part of it due to Drake cozying up to our legends over the years.
He shouted out 50 on Push Ups.
He brought out Dipset while he was in NYC for his tour.
Had Cam and Mase rocking the OVO varsity jackets.
S*** like that

Prime radio would’ve helped is my point.
And I’m not even gonna lie A Boogie didn’t even get much play out here while he was on fire

Ebro's argument, if I remember correctly, is that 105 was kicking ass around that time and whatever new content Hot would put into rotation didn't translate into retention
They're continuously going up against iHeart, which many stations across the nation succumb too.
I get your point, but the point I remembered from Ebro was that the people didn't support in their most popular times
You don’t like the album okay now what do you want us to ask why you dont like it and then go oh wow thats a great perspective im really glad i asked u

Kendrick started dressing all cool and stuff
I think this was a major thing damaging his image for a bit
This was a good decision
