Just cause it’s a bit cartoony or absurdist at times doesn’t means he just does some random s***.. well at times he does. Dead or Alive OG ending was random but sure is iconic AF.

Gozu was amazing to me and really made a lot of sense. Bold ass movie. Also “Yakuza attack dog” still had me rolling on the floor every time. It’s so dark but funny as hell.

My favs are Ichi The Killer, 13 Assassins, Gozu, Dead or Alive & I really like First Love.. that was really a return to form for me and a lot of fun.

What about Tsukamoto & Sion Sono?

idk gozu has its funny moment, like the attack on the dog or the ladle scene, it's just too dull for me which is probably due to it not being able to consistently hold that surrealist atmosphere steady thanks to its slow pace.

i've only seen like 3 tsukamoto films, the last of which was like 3 years ago, so i have no strong feelings on him whatsoever. I've seen like 10 sono films, and I really liked love exposure, why don't you play in hell, and tokyo tribe but he has also made some absolute garbage like prisoners of the ghostland.

Tsukamoto is really dope, very talented filmmaker on a technical level too id rec checking him out more bc his filmog is small anyway

Yeah Sion Sono can be hit or miss, ones you named are great. And true, even Nic Cage couldn’t save ghostlands..

Hazard is a really cool underrated Sono film. Flipping the westerner finding himself in Asia thing upside down placing a Japanese guy in NYC making friends and doing crimes just for fun. Hilarious movie and also really charming at times

i didn't mind climax but thought irreversible was some dumb edgelord nonsense. i actually stopped enter the void 10 minutes in since i just got a bad headache from watching it and ended up deleting it

There was a period couple years ago where I got with 2 of my friends couple times a week who didn’t know nothing about kino

Ended up watching a f*** ton of Takashi Miike, introduced them to all of Twin Peaks, Jodo holy mountain etc etc

Every night I just picked outrageous bangers because they got hip to the weird side of kino quickly and both of the bros were just bamboozled every time that films could be this out there and stylish

We had so much fun
