hanabi has the unforgivingness as well but it also has its moments of tenderness as well, which Kitano somehow intertwines together in a beautiful way
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a Kitano so in all fairness my thought would probably be different now but like I said Violent Cop always stood out. Was just such a bold film as a debut when everybody knew him as a goofy comedian guy and not as an auteur filmmaker
You fw Takashi Miike? He’s my fav out of that whole wave of Japanese directors. Seen probably around 30 films of his and that isnt even 1/3rd of his actual filmog yet

revisit kitano. i actually prefer something like Dolls over Violent Cop tbh. Dolls is just emotionally brutal.
I've seen like 19 Miike films and I like most of the ones that I've seen, with 13 Assassins and Fudoh being my fav. I seem to dislike the ones that he's gotten a heavy cult following with, like Visitor Q and Gozu. I think my biggest issue with him is that he doesn't seem to no how to end a film, so he just makes up some random s*** (like in Gozu and the Dead or Alive films.
