Tbh, an almost 50 year old rapper who's burn many bridges and is semi-blackballed even beating the newer rappers in these stats who are supposed to be the new ringleaders is a horrible sign for mainstream hip hop.
It's 2025, and we got the 2010's Big 3(Drake, Kendrick, Cole) and the 2000's Big 3(Ye, Em, and Wayne) beating the newer rappers in daily streams who are supposed to be the sound for the youth and reflect rap's evolution to the next generation.
The fact that we're even talking about Ye's daily streams like he's some YN who debuted in the Soundcloud era is kinda crazy ngl. Mainstream rap is getting carried by Millennial and Gen X dads and grandfathers lol.

I kind of disagree.
I think it reflects the state of mainstream rap's stagnation and how most newer rappers aren't in a position to "save" rap or carry the mantle after the Big 3 slow down or retire.
And I say that as someone who has many favorite rap albums that had little sales and no hits at all.
As a popular genre though, I would like to see more newer mainstream rappers actually dominate and help usher us into the 2030's. It can't just be Carti lol.
But yes. On a technical level, it doesn't mean much in terms of just the quality of music itself. I do think we're getting to a point where we've accepted rappers under 30 who are supposed to be "up next" flopping more than established vets and legacy acts though which is upside down compared to the past.

lil baby only managed to break 100k last time because he used that shady website deluxe gimmick that somehow netted him 50k pure sales. i wouldn't be surprised if some rappers are scrambling now that billboard patched it, it was basically the last way for them to boost their numbers without having to sell CDs and vinyls.
basically the golden age of fast food rap seems to be over. you need to have a fanbase that will buy your music or else you're going to flop.

Yeah that and streams are down at least 50% minimum vs a few years ago, I honestly think even as much as 70-80%
