It clearly wasn't that bad because before 2 years after its release, people were already doing a 180° turn on the album.
What happened with the album is what happens with all of Drake's music: people go into it with a set mind on what the music MUST be and when it doesn't turn out to be that, they call it trash, as opposed to how people approach the music of most other artists, which is judging it on its own merit and deciding if it's good and going from there.
Why would someone use objectivity when music is a subjective medium? Drake himself has said this. If someone thinks it’s trash they think it’s trash. Why do they have to be some pitchfork tier listener as if they are the only people on earth who think Drake is trash.
21 savage said niggas from where he’s from don’t listen to Drake like that. I guess they are pitchfork/Fantano watchers too?
And doing all this over a song like which one is even crazier. S*** has a central cee verse. It’s already an uphill battle for that song
21 capping, Drake gets plenty of love in the UK

No cap…

"Jay was never the biggest rapper"
He never was. You think first week sales alone are what determine who the biggest rappers were?
ah yes, the beef songs not on the album and the event months after the album were the determining factor here
You're silly if you don't think the beef played into the success of GNX. It's thousands of people who went to the Grand National Tour just to see Kendrick perform Not Like Us. Many of them have admitted as much.
end of an era damn
crazy to think it was all kicked off by one album
weren’t you arguing before that gnx was his biggest album because of the beef?
GNX lost momentum quicker than I thought it would but it's still the Kendrick album with his biggest hit records.
what about the album in between that?
Kendrick stans don't like to talk about that album. It never happened, according to them.

idk about this one. Those Kendrick fans seem proud of that album and say it’s one of his most important.

No, they don't like to talk about the album because it's his worst-performing album commercially since Section 80. They'd rather talk about the Mr. Morale tour when they wanna talk about the success he enjoyed during that period than the actual album.

Like HNVM never really happened for most Drake stans
