Y’all act like it’s some conspiracy that the radio doesn’t spam Drake music this decade when the quiet truth is that he just really hasn’t released any undeniable pop hits this decade
Why would it have to be a pop song to do great on radio
Why would it have to be a pop song to do great on radio
Y’all are complaining about Pop Radio specifically
NOKIA is getting plenty spin on Urban stations
Man, I wonder why Drake stans don't call Rih "goat" for having 14 #1 BB Hot 100 hits.
I guess when the narratives fits, it's a hit
Say what you want about Drake haters and mental illness and everything else. But surely it's even more exhausting being a committed Drake stan who has to hate on the 10+ opps?

You just mentioned an R&B song doing great on Pop Radio then said Drake would have to make a good pop song to do well lol

luther is a Pop/R&B record what are you talking
NOKIA is a Pop song too it’s just not that sticky
Anyway interesting. Someone mentioned club play earlier and unironically that's an interesting thought and a reason you should never take these charts as gospel as far as cultural relevance goes

Imma be honest
Not even sure what classifies a record as pop nowadays
Luther is more hip/hop/R&B to me than anything pop but 🤷♂️ idk
What was he supposed to do besides a video and sending it to radio
Nokia became a single mid March and by April he was already hinting at the solo album.
Do I really need to list the ways artists promote pop songs other than dropping a really bad and unfitting music video and sending it to radio?

I'm not well versed in the pop music realm
Pls do tell

Ain’t nothing hip-hop about luther other than the fact that Kendrick Lamar’s name is attached to it

Artists sometimes go on platforms to perform new songs, and maybe even do a little interview.
They have accounts on the biggest social media platform in the world (that just happens to be all about music) where they promote said music
There's two for ya

Drake is too cool for school for any of this

Yeah he ain't doing interviews for one song lmao
But he did post stories promo-ing Nokia

He doesn’t do interviews for anything anymore. That plays a part in it

He especially doesn’t wanna talk about losing the beef, and you know that’s gonna be a constant question

And? How's that an excuse? It took Anxiety less than 6 weeks to go #1 on pop radio and in 8 weeks, it was the #1 song on overall radio. SZA and Kendrick didn't have to do any of the things you're suggesting to get Luther as the #1 song on radio either.
Nokia was the perfect song to be a radio hit but pop radio historically doesn't play Drake songs, even his pop hits so you can't blame that on him.
Now Nokia isn't a sticky hit
There aren't 3 songs released this year that are more catchy than that song. If Post Malone released that song, it'd be the #1 song on radio in 4 weeks.
Pop radio is so notorious for not playing Drake's biggest pop hits that even ROLLING STONE wrote an article about it in 2018
They suggested In My Feelings would change that but of course, despite it being a 10-week #1 hit, it didn't

Anxiety never hit #1, it peaked at #9. Luther was performed at the Superbowl - literally the biggest event in the US.
I'm discussing the chart performance, not radio. Nokia was never the most-streamed song of any week. Maybe some promotion would've made a difference. Idc about radio conspiracy theories.
Song is so sticky that it’s plummeted below 9M streams per week not even 6 months post-release
Y’all got it
For reference, a song like Die With A Smile, which released in August 2024, is still reeling in 11M+ streams per week. NOKIA is at 8.5M and it released not even 6 months ago.
