The biggest reason Rap is declining is something half this forum still is in denial about: zero new tangible rap stars rising this decade. Billboard rules got nothing to do with that
2019-2020 was the last time new fresh names were pushing conversations but they’ve either burned out or settled into fanbases
by 21-22 most’ve them already had their peak eras
yeah people were saying the drake kendrick beef saved rap, but if anything it looks like it was the grand finale for rap as a dominant cultural force. at least for the time being.
lowkey fax
It’s been plenty of people on this site who start crying the “you’re not a real rap fan if you saying it’s dead” denial nonsense and also the ones who just claim it’s monoculture dying when at best it’s a partial obstacle but ultimately misplaced blame.
There can still be huge new names & huge hits from new artists. It’s been plenty examples in other genres
ah i see yea i’d agree
i guess what i’d really be more interested is why you think no new stars have emerged
Where’s the rap that should be on top right now?
Rap songs will never have the same amount of radio as pop songs thats why they wont decrease the weight of radio.

rap isnt dying though. monoculture in rap and music as a whole is.

The real stars moving monumental numbers: xxx, juicewrld died
But even then I’m not too sure the would’ve survived the following resurgence of street rap

Trap music quite honestly had the biggest effect on killing the genre’s mainstream appeal and pushing it forward
It was fine in like 2017, but at this point it’s beating a dead horse.
It’s not a boomer take if you point out it objectively killed lyricism and also production by lowering the quality.
Turned being a rapper into a DIY thing. It’s always been that somewhat but now rappers are just d*** dealers who did rap for fun one day instead of having an actual musical passion their entire lives.
BigXThaPlug, BossMan, etc’s will never have any true appeal outside their regional hoods because that is all their music appeals to.

Sure, but what rap songs are dominating streaming right now?
Sure, but what rap songs are dominating streaming right now?
None right now. But just talking in general last few years
Morgan Wallen dropped 37 songs and the number one song next week is not going to be any of them and under 200 points. What going on?
Labels gotta invest in talented rappers again.
We just getting regional “rappers” making the same indistinguishable trap music.
BigXThaPlug, Bossman Dlow, etc are not legitimate artists like what are we hyping as the future of the genre at this point lol
BINGO!!! The superstars of today trying to put their people on and don’t want to invest in a talented artist. If they would stop throwing money in their circle and start investing it in an up and coming artist like the guys before them did for them, this wouldn’t be a conversation. That’s just from my perspective though, I’m sure there are plenty of other issues at hand.
Baby Keem is mid
We discussing commercial potential. Keem album doing 100K imo.
I think Keem next album is going to do some damage.
Like culturally, right
