I just think it's costly af to go from the ground up with original material, without any guarantee that it catches on, when you can just make a show vaguely similar to a popular show (not something I fw but I get it).
Take for example, this animator from Zambia

It's got to start within to build that industry, and that'll take decades. I've seen so much back and forth about black anime fans wanting more representation in anime, but Japan is...xenophobic and ignorant about black culture.
Why would anyone expect Japanese people to be tasteful about representing poc people when they haven't had a good track record? (They still should do the work)

Very common w recent big releases in all industries now tbh, not just music. You see movies open with like $100M worldwide then drop to $10M next box office cycle. Albums like Doja’s Hot Pink & Planet Her which had like poor opening weeks but then consistently sold 50k/week for over a year are increasingly super rare.
