And even touring is a losing battle cause artists can’t even make up costs. This is a growing issue for musicians of all sizes

Having to tour to sniff at financial freedom is the very thing artists are pissed about

Thank you. Typing paragraphs to cape for streaming, something that NUMEROUS artists have said isn’t a fair financial system, is crazy.

That's a lie. Russ will be the first to tell you that's a lie. He's broken down countless times, just how much money he makes off streaming, despite never having any chart-topping hits. He makes millions every year.

Like before streaming, the money you generate from your music as an artist has to do with:
    1. The terms of the deal you signed with your label.
    2. His viable your music is at garnering streams, no matter how little.
    3. How much you're involved in the creative process of your music (songwriting, production, etc).

The thing with Russ is that he had to drop 3-4 times a month until he made any money off streaming, plus he produces his own beats (which 95% of artists aren’t doing) so he’s earning double the publishing based off that alone

And to that “drop a song” once-a-week type model you would have to sacrifice quality a little bit to follow that model which if your an artist that takes time to make your music then that is not viable option

Not saying his business model is bad but it doesn’t apply to everyone

Well, that's a part of the job. That's like an NBA player mad that he has to travel for 41 away games every season. It's simply what comes with the gig. You can't want to make enough money to be financially secure and still complain about that.

That's something artists are contending with NOW, and that's true. But for smaller venues, costs aren't nearly as massive as once you start playing arenas/stadiums. That's why I don't get all these rappers who can't sell out arenas, still going ahead to book them. They're better off playing 5-6k capacity venues.

Nobody is caping. I just explained to you that Spotify didn't turn a profit for 17 years till last year. They paid out $60B in royalties last year to all major record labels. Even if they paid $100B to major record labels every year, most artists still won't see much of that money. It's not their fault that artists aren't getting their share of that pie.

That's on the major record labels f***ing artists over and that's why I broke down the various reasons why that's even able to happen (bad recording/publishing deals, artists not writing/producing their music, artists not generating enough streams from their music, etc).

People keep screaming for Spotify to pay artists more but from which money? It's not like they're generating a trillion dollars every year. And even if they did pay out more money at higher rates, they'd still have to pay the money directly to the rightsholders of the music, which are, more often than not, the labels, before any of it gets to the artists. It's not that hard to understand.

Oh yes, of course. The general point I'm trying to make is that to get to a place where you'll start making real money from your music as an artist, you'll have to sacrifice and work hard.

Drake was able to get himself the best deal in the industry by signing multiple short-term deals and leveraging the success of his music over several years to get better terms for each new deal he signed but to be able to have that leverage in the first place, his music had to generate real money. If he wasn't amassing billions of streams yearly, he doesn't have the leverage to ask for hundreds of millions of dollars from any record label but to even get to the point where his music became that successful, he had to work his ass off. The man hasn't taken any real breaks since 2006. How many artists are willing to sacrifice and work that hard to get to where they need to be? That's why I'm talking about.

Streaming as a business model is not beneficial for the artists nor the consumers. It’s not that hard to understand.

Like its really not hard to grasp
You pay less money to enjoy your artists favorite music
So the artists get paid less
    Lol
But id say its beneficial for consumers tho since they have access to more music for cheaper

Yes but also, the art consumers have access to is directly devalued due to streaming, and we don’t own any of the stuff we consume via streaming. Albums and films and shows can be taken off a streaming service with the snap of a finger because we don’t own any of it, we’re simply renting it

Owning music is more of a hardcore music fan/purist sort of thing

The average consumer most likely do not care if they own the music digitally or physically they just want easier access to the music they like

They will care when what’s been happening with film & TV streaming services starts happening with music streaming services.

Wait until the day one of the majors starts beefing with Spotify and s***’ll get ugly real quick

I’m curious to see the sales for Rocky’s new album. I’ve got a feeling there’ll be a big surprise and this could be his comeback. It’d be cool to see Rocky make a strong return.
