Artists that are able to move physicals in today’s landscape are usually also able to sell a good amount of digital copies as well (first week).

Examples:

• UTOPIA sold 111K in digital downloads

• One Thing At A Time sold 87K in digital downloads

• Midnights sold 161K in digital downloads

• The Death of Slim Shady sold 114K in digital downloads

• Cowboy Carter sold 42K in digital downloads

• GNX sold 32K in digital downloads

Drake’s first week digital download total progression goes as follows:

• Views: 852K

• Scorpion: 160K

• CLB: 46K

• HNVM: 11K

• Her Loss: 12K

• FATD: 10K

Went from 160K to 10K in the span of 5 years, and even someone like Kendrick is still able to do 32K off a complete surprise release.

All of those albums I named could not have digital copies bundled with merch items. Billboard banned that in 2020.

Kendrick barely did any promotion for GNX and it still sold 32K in digital copies first week.

And to correct your point earlier, Views did not have any physical copies available week one. Its’ first week pure sales total was all digital downloads.

This is cope man.

He was the major artist that is directly responsible for ushering in the streaming era. It’s not a stretch of the mind to make the conclusion that the majority of his listeners do not care about buying physical or digital copies, and are only interested in streaming. Same applies to Bad Bunny.

He had a merch site for DTMF and only did 25K in pure sales.

Look I’m not even saying pure sales wouldn’t help Drake. Obviously they would, they can only help.

I’m just saying he wouldn’t go from 400K with streaming to 800K+ total with some physical & digital copies included.

His fanbase is not that rabid nor do they care about purchasing real copies en masse like other artists’ fanbases do

I don’t think the difference between 10K and 35K digital sales is the presence of a merch site, especially because most people that visit the merch site are buying physical copies instead.

Scorpion didn’t have a merch site with a digital album for sale; how did it do 160K in digital downloads?

We’re talking about artists that are as big as Drake. That’s what I mean by “peers”, not just rappers.

Mr. Morale sold the same amount of digital copies first week as Drake’s previous three studio albums combined.

There’s obviously a disconnect there and Drake’s audience clearly heavily & primarily favors streaming
