Yes, first week numbers aren't everything but they tell you a lot when you're a major mainstream artist like the Weeknd. So, now, we should judge literally every major artist by their first week numbers except The Weeknd? How does that work? Especially when he's had multiple albums that have done 300k+ first week in the past. You'd think I'm suggesting he do 1M first week or something

You can't spend all day bragging about the Weeknd being one of the biggest artists in the world but then conveniently make excuses for him when you think an album of his will underperform. It doesn't work that way.

We literally judge every other major artist in this very thread by their first week numbers. Every single one. When one underperforms or flops, we point it out. You know this.

The Weeknd isn't Rihanna who has never done up to 240k units first week. He's debuted with 300k+ units three times in the 5 albums he's released so far but I'm insane for suggesting that with him releasing his longest album yet, having physicals on pre-order for MONTHS, having the hype of this being his last album as the Weeknd, just coming off a massive stadium world tour as well as the huge promotional campaign for Vision Pro in line with the album, all those things should be enough for him to manage a 400k+ debut? I'm not suggesting 500k or something he's never done before. Like what are we saying here? I'd never make that suggestion if the album was dropping without physicals like Dawn FM or if he was doing something left-field like making a rock album or a country album. He's doing what he's always done.

It's also not like we haven't seen an R&B album perform well on streaming. SOS dropped with 23 songs (with a bunch of songs we'd heard already as singles) and debuted with over 400M US streams. SOS is SZA's second studio album. She'd never even played arenas before dropping that album and doing those numbers.

I just don't get how you can't keep making excuses for dude because you'd never let anyone else get away with it.

Same person was here not too long ago insisting that Drake's next album with PND must do at least 300k or its a flop, despite knowing that his R&B songs are his worst-performing songs numbers-wise. Dude's reason is that Drake is Drake so anything he drops should do numbers, regardless of whatever genre he dabbles in.

Dude was also one of those in here calling Honestly, Nevermind — a surprise DANCE album that did over 200k first week — a flop. Why? Because it was released by Drake.

But if anyone has reasonable commercial expectations for a normal the Weeknd album with a lot more favorable variables working in its favour this time around that should ensure its success, they're insane
