I feel the same way. I've never been for artists resorting to smoke and mirror tactics to make themselves appear more successful than they actually are because I think it's wack and unnecessary. If you're really that successful, the music and the raw/organic motion around your moves should speak to it. That's why despite all his efforts, he couldn't secure a legit chart hit for Utopia and none of his features after that have done anything. It's certain things you simply can't fake.

What does securing a hit have to do with determining the success of an album and how is it smoke and mirrors when it’s one of the highest streamed albums (all genres) of 2023 and 2024 so far both domestically and globally?

What does securing a hit have to do with determining the success of an album and how is it smoke and mirrors when it’s one of the highest streamed albums (all genres) of 2023 and 2024 so far both domestically and globally?

For Utopia, he used $5 vinyls to keep the album at #1 for 4 consecutive weeks. The album promptly left the top 10 after the vinyls ran out and it hasn't reached the top 10 since then. Those vinyls weren't reflective of organic consumption because many of his fans spent months complaining about never receiving their vinyls or getting entirely different albums instead.

As for the DBR re-release, releasing multiple digital versions of the album, all in a bid to boost its numbers, is what's reflective of smoke and mirrors tactics because the mixtape isn't really being consumed organically. The streams reflect that.

No one is saying Travis isn't successful or that Utopia is a flop. All I'm saying is that he's very fond of resorting to tactics to make him/his projects appear bigger/more successful than they actually are. He didn't need to resort to $5 vinyls to boost ASTROWORLD on the charts because it had organic hits and was largely consumed via streaming for months following its release. As for Utopia, without those $5 vinyls, it probably only spends 1 week at #1 and even fewer weeks in the top 10, which is thr actual reflection of how the album was consumed.

You keep talking about physical sales when I’m strictly talking about streaming which is the era we’re in today. By that standard, it has been one of the most listened to albums of last year and this year and the numbers are there to prove it. So you keep talking about and focusing on first week sales tactics, when I’m talking about the overall consumption of the album, which the numbers prove has been getting consumed en masse since release

By your standard when it was on last years billboard year end list top 10 and it will be on this years top 10 as well, is it not successful?

It's literally amassed 5 billion streams in one year and she's trying to say it was consumed heavily in the weeks following its' release

I never said the album wasn't successful. Taylor Swift's latest album is successful as well without all the multiple variants she's released over the past couple of weeks. I said Travis resorts to tactics that make his albums appear more successful than they are and that's a fact. He's not alone in that. Taylor does the same. Doesn't mean the albums aren't successful without those shenanigans, which is why I said I don't like when artists resort to those tactics, especially when they're unnecessary.
