mr. morale simply turned off casual listeners, industry insiders projected a 400k debut weeks before the album released and HDD gave it an initial projection of 350k after the first day of streaming, the album simply had no replay value for casual listeners and they abandoned it to the point that it severely underperformed its projections. if kendrick released a DAMN. esque project with mainstream appeal next he’ll be in the 350-400k range

Yup.
Had a friend who listened to it on release and it brought her to tears. She loved the album and thought it was extremely important but she has said she had no desire to revisit it, don’t think she has done so at all since.
But the a hit helps when we are talking about long term commercial sustainability. GKMC/DAMN are selling more than his last album already. His last album didn't debut too high due to sound/commercial hit and also didn't sustain as well commercially because of the content and therefore lack of hits. Debut can happen but sustainability requires songs to click. Also, once you cross 250k threshold you pretty much by default will a temporary hit (that chats top 20). It needs to sustain over long period of time though. I am not disagreeing with you. What you said works but I don't think it works for majority, only minority.
My Turn has 0 hits and has sold like 2m more units then After Hours in the US, dunno how tho
How did Beyonce's Cowboy Carter double the first day numbers of Renaissance man wtf, ive never seen an established artist do that before, even w the extra tracks its insane
because Renaissance was her reintroduction to the streaming era after her self sabotage during the 2010s with Tidal

Still had huge songs hitting top 20 and top 10 though.
All In (x1 plat), Emotionally Scarred (x3 plat), Sum 2 Prove (x4 plat), We Paid (x5 plat), Bigger Picture (x2 plat), Woah (x5 plat), etc.

My Turn def had hits
this is all great. news articles was saying hip hop is over commercially
It’s good right now but it’s relying on too many older acts. Need some new rappers to put up numbers like this.
Yah I would like to see that. Everybody in this beef is from the 2010s era. They literally carrying this era rn

wont happen. lil baby dropped the ball
Why do you think that is?
I mean there is a lot of factors that go into it. But the biggest one I would say to me is authenticity. The new rappers dont seem authentic to their music. They sound the same and are looking to over inflate there numbers by putting 20+ tracks on their album. Be authentic and focus on quality over quantity.

Well unfortunately the new niggas who had all the potential to blow tf up died way too young

man the highest certified song is 5x plat lol, that's nothing considering it's sold 6m units just in the US lol
compare it to After Hours
Blinding Lights went 10x plat 2 years ago now, by now it's probably 15x
then there's Save Your Tears which by now is probably nearing diamond
saying My Turn had hits is an injustice to what actual hits are imo

If they're huge what are the songs that have sold 10-20m units? like Starboy, Blinding Lights, God's Plan, Sicko Mode type hits?
My Turn had nothing even close to those, but still outsold After Hours & Harry Styles album and loads of others

It doesnt?
a song that has been certified 5x platinum is 100% a hit and it isnt any diservice to bigger songs, there will be bigger and smaller hits always.
There isnt a world where u can say We Paid wasnt a hit...

Turned off more than casual listeners
It just wasn’t an album that justified a 5 year hiatus
