I thought streaming has blown up since DAMN...

Streaming blew up 100 percent. Physicals went down 90 percent. Kendrick does most of his sales from physicals. So it won’t benefit him as much as it does an Uzi Bert who fans streams his s*** more.

aside from the new billboard rule, is it actually proven how much this has effected charts before or is it just speculation?

yes, these artists whose fan bases participate in mass buying campaigns have "popular" songs and albums almost entirely driven by digital sales in an era where digital sales are the weakest form of music media. look at the sudden influx of nicki minaj #1 songs after her fans started to manipulate the charts with mass buying. billboard doesn't make rules changes for no reason

Do you think it’s fair to be comparing 10-12 track album sales to 20-25 track album sales?

    It’s like 2 different leagues

Not really. Tha Carter V had 23 tracks and debuted with 433M US streams. Scorpion had 25 tracks and debuted with 750M US streams. There are 18-25+ track albums that didn't pull up to 300M US streams but The Off-Season with 12 tracks managed to do so. If people will stream your album, they will do so regardless of how many tracks it has on it. It just helps in that first week if you're a streaming force and your album has many tracks.

He definitely will. Kanye had 5 days out of the 7-day tracking week, that's why he only did 309K.

You're telling me I can get merch for $20 just so an artist I like can have bigger numbers? Sign me up

You can buy physicals now but they only count towards first week sales if they ship first week

    With 12 tracks that’s crazy

The Off Seasons stream per song were close to Scorpions. Imagine if Cole released a 20 song album.

Streams per track decreases with the number of tracks though. A 12 song album like Off-Season can pull in 27m per song. Cole wouldn't come close to that with a 25 song album like Scorpion

Yeah, the less songs his album has, the less streams it'll pull. He doesn't have pure sales this time around to boost his numbers. For reference, DAMN did 353K in pure sales in it's first week. The new album might not even do 70K pure sales in it's first week.

Tyler did 55k pure, beating Cole and Drake. I think Kendrick will do around 70k. He has a similar fanbase as Tyler

  • Theory

DAMN got 340 million streams first week. At that time the biggest first week stream number was held by Drake with More Life at 385 million. Drake still holds the record as far I know, with CLB getting 744 million.

Streaming has blown up since DAMN. I think 600 million streams is pretty attainable for Kendrick. Possibly more given the long absence. That would give him 400k right there.

His other albums still well on physicals, with GKMC being the highest selling rap album on vinyl (and vinyl sales have become the largest physical seller for a lot of artists).

So I think 500k is attainable. I don’t think 1 million is attainable.

the thing with physicals, vinyls is that there's a delay usually. most artists nowadays don't wanna risk an early leak and put physicals in stores/ on trucks before the official release, that's why ppl like Cudi can have huge sales spikes due to vinyl months after release, they don't add to official sales until they go out

Pure sales have declined more than streaming has increased

I'm surprised more artists haven't exploited this by just opening preorders way in advance of the album and then delaying the release so by the time the album releases the merch ships

I have very little doubt the album will be amazing but how don't people get how much pure sales have died since DAMN. and how much streaming still hasn't been able to make up for the gap left as a result?

How much you think push is gonna sell ?

Tyler did that many pure with only CDs and cassettes. If Kendrick has a vinyl ready to ship first week he’s easily eclipsing that pure sales number

Kendrick isn't going to have vinyl ready to ship. DAMN's vinyls didn't ship until three months after release. And that was without a vinyl pressing supply chain issue. Tyler is just now shipping his vinyls

Cole and Drake did their pure sales without any box sets, Tyler didn't.

Of Call Me If You Get Lost’s 169,000 equivalent album units earned in the tracking week ending July 1, SEA units comprise 114,000 (equaling 152.96 million on-demand streams of the album’s tracks), album sales comprise 55,000 (largely from deluxe box sets sold exclusively via the artist’s webstore) and TEA units comprise less than 1,000.

We literally don’t know that. Harry’s House pre order just went up and they’re shipping first week. We don’t know if production for Mr. Morale started months in advance. We have to wait and see.

And Harry's House has leaked a month before release. If Kendrick was pressing vinyls right now we'd already have the album cause someone would've taken one home from the plant

It leads to leaks though. Thats why a lot of artists don’t do physicals week 1

i think a lot of you are underestimating how much anticipation drives streaming numbers, comparing this album to donda (even if it had a full tracking week and wasn't bloated with 27 songs) makes no sense because kanye has been EXTREMELY visible in the past 5 years and has released multiple albums in that period.

even with 14 songs i would be shocked if kendrick did anything less than 400 million streams especially when his last 14 track album did 350 million streams in a weak 2017 streaming climate
