Chris Stapleton is still the top imo but he’s much more rock than country in the current pop country context. Same with people like Sturgill or Brandi to me, great music but more in the roots vein.

Kacey Musgraves, Zach Bryan, Kelsea Ballerini, Luke Combs, Morgan Wade, Jon Pardi are the only ones that come to mind that I’ve really liked recently. Granted country isn’t a genre I go deep in very often but I’ve always hated the Luke Bryan/Fancy Like/Dirt Road Anthem ass modern country pop. Every Morgan song feels like a collection of the qualities I hate in that style, granted with very good production usually. His lyrics are just so blatantly vapid, it feels like Imagine Dragons with twang and with at least 2 out of three of whiskey/trucks/his ex mentioned in every song.

This for ex kicks the s*** out of Morgan Wallen’s entire discography

yeah i like all those artists a lot too, i still like morgan wallen's songs a bit more and just find them catchier with better vocals than most. for me like 1/4 of wallens songs fit your criticism and i dont like them but the rest i can tolerate him talking about whiskey to get over an ex again, idgaf

people like luke combs and jon pardi definitely arent free of those cliches youre criticizing though about beer, drunks etc. combs does it in like every single song as much as anyone and pardi does it like a throwback thing which i dont really mind at all tbf. i dont listen to pop country for lyrics. i do like zach bryans lyrics tho hes easily one of the most gifted songwriters out and future goat

i think all these people are way ahead of the luke bryan/fancy like/dirt road anthem s*** in terms of quality btw

Yeah KTT put me on to Zach Bryan and I finally listened and he’s a future star for sure. Like, future Grammy winner in a non genre category star.

Agreed on why I’m ok with it with Pardi, and to be fair I’ve only heard Mr. Saturday Night, but Luke Combs comes through with much better storytelling imo. I definitely do approach country for the lyrics though, like in terms of sound I much prefer any other electronic-based genre. But good country lyricism with a good voice over brush drums and a slide guitar is fantastic for the right mood.

Idk I’ve given Morgan a chance musically, but there just really doesn’t seem to be enough there to justify his success to me especially considering how unlikable he is in his public persona both in lyrics and with his controversies. I’m always willing to be proven wrong and admit it, but at this point he’s got a lot more going against him than for him for me.

Not even remotely comparable offenses, but he kind of falls in the Chris Brown category for me in terms of “yeah this is fine musically but no where near enough to outweigh everything else.” Granted I like Chris Brown’s music a lot more but you get what I’m getting at. There’s just too much good music in this world to keep giving s***ty people chances - for me at least.

for me instead of 1,200 streams being 1 sale it’s should just be a flat 1,000 streams

strongly recommend Heartache Medication by Jon Pardi, his best album imo and some amazing songs on there. just so well done

for good lyrics/emotion in country i like the older stuff more. like pre-80s before the "contemporary country" era

That’s fair, I just honestly have trouble understanding what people see in the guy and that feels like the main differentiator at times

a big part also is his appeal to women. none of his country peers have as enthusiastic of a female fanbase that he does. and we know white women specifically have always been a demographic that drives sales numbers so much

Relatable lyrics, good voice, catchy hooks, modern country-pop production.
