kelela on her BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival performance

there is an immense amount of pressure on artists to be or do one thing. Both the industry and consumers often expect us to stay in one place musically and aesthetically, but i’ve always had the intention to showcase my range so that y’all know there is literally no sound and/or look that I’m closed off to—imma just do it my way. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

there’s a few diff reasons for that: one of them is that i grew up listening to what felt like a chaotic mixture of sounds—from traditional r&b and gospel to some very out there jazz records (both instrumental and vocal). all of that lived alongside musical soundtracks and a range of “world music” artists. as I got older i’d build connections wit people who helped push my ear further—kris @funndamentals and janelle @luzamor8 . not only did they introduce me to be-bop and more progressive jazz, they showed me an interpretive way of listening to popular music that has been wit me ever since.

then there was my deep dive into the stylings of betty carter, @amellarrieux and @bilalmusic. I love me a flip (as y’all can see from my obsession wit editing, remixing and aquaphoria-ing 😉) and they taught me how!! that was followed by my progressive metal and hardcore ear training lol…i was in what i like to call the kelela conservatory of popular and unpopular music.

when i started making club music, i always promised myself that eventually id integrate these other parts of myself. i’ve been able to do that at moments but last saturday took it to a whole other level cuz I was able to express it in a single show wit the inimitable @thejasonmoran, pen-master rahrah gabor @mariellalamuneca and the brilliant @_osun ?! 😩 what a dream.

the @briccelebratebk venue holds 9k ppl but over 26k of y’all rsvp’d. beyond thankful to every single one of you for sharing this moment wit me and being SO PRESENT for the entire set!!!
