i don’t mind religious direction either, but a lot of JIK felt forced and surface level

JIK was very much an album by a recent convert. Kanye even talked about this. When you first give yourself to religion in that way, many people have a very extremist and surface-level understanding of how they're supposed to be. Kanye was struggling with how exactly to make music 'for God' and JIK came out of that. I have a feeling he's adjusted and is probably more comfortable now in terms of his faith, so the music will be better, I'm guessing.
