The "meme" version of meditation would tell you to "silence your mind". That's not going to work. Instead you're supposed to realize that YOU are not your mind.
Let your mind have its thoughts, and just treat them like birds chirping out the window. Observe them as if you're an outsider.

If they are thoughts you don't like, then realize that unwanted thoughts popping up is an opportunity to let them go. Just watch it go by, and wave. If you don't "claim it" by believing it's yours, or by getting all worked up over it, then it will leave.

That's part of what meditation is. The idea of sitting and closing your eyes is only a recommendation, not necessary. You can do it with your eyes open while walking and chewing bubble gum if you want t
