First of all, I hope that everyone is getting the most enjoyment they can out of CLB. This has been a long time coming and I'm sure you are all relieved to be through with the countless rumors, memes, and general frustration that came with all the delays to this project. I myself am not a diehard fan of Drake, but I most certainly appreciate his monumental position in the music industry and enjoy quite a few of his songs, so I was also highly anticipating this release and was pretty excited when it finally arrived. This isn't meant to take a huge s*** on who is most likely the #1 artist for many of you reading. This is just me airing out my thoughts and, hopefully, being able to engage in some thoughtful and enjoyable discussion with some of you, whether you loved or hated the album, agree with or completely disagree with my opinion.

I'd like to start with what my personal expectations for this project were. It's been ten years since Take Care, which is my favorite Drake project by quite a significant margin, so I was hoping that, ten years later, Drake would finally deliver a classic on that level. Beyond that, the majority of Drake's catalouge since IYRTITL has received mediocre reception, so it would've been great to have a "comeback" project of sorts. Finally, after two albums in a row being disliked as much as they have been, if this album didn't exceed the quality of Views and Scorpion by quite a bit, I personally would've lost the remaining hope I had in Drake to make a return to glory of sorts.

Beyond my own expectations, everyone and their grandmothers had expectations for this project. Once again, after all the numerous delays, people were getting impatient, and naturally, people also started speculating that this album would be different. This album wouldn't be the bloated and rushed mess that was Scorpion. It wouldn't be the low effort quality of DLDT, or the loose compilation that was More Life, or the bland commercial drab that was Views. There had to be a reason Drake was taking this long; he must be truly perfecting his craft, writing the best lyrics of his career, putting together the stickiest hooks, and building his most sonically compelling piece of work to date.

Now, obviously meeting these sorts of expectations would be an unfair requirement for this album, but the reason why this album is so disappointing is that it feels like it doesn't even try to be any of those things. It just sounds...like a normal post-IFRYITL Drake project. Lyrically, Drake is talking about the same things: love, lust, and emotional games, and while it would be ridiculous to ask Drake to rap/sing about anything else than what he's used to and knows the best, it wouldn't be as ridiculous to ask for more layered beats, more intricate instrumentation or a greater variety and experimentation in sound. Of course, this album contains none of those things, perfectly content to run the course that Drake has ran for the past five years. It makes me almost spiteful of the incredible marketing Drake did for this album. Yes, the marketing and rollout for this album (when it finally began) is my favorite aspect of this project. Everything from the heavily memed cover art, to the feature-announcing billboards, to the choice to not release any singles beforehand, got me genuinely excited for something new, something bold, something refreshing from Drake. Instead, he delivered another album that just ends up being too long and plays too safe.

I don't want this post to be entirely negative, so I will say that the intro track is the only exception to all the criticisms I've made of the record thus far. Champagne Poetry is a great opener, with its hypnotic, eerie sample that transitions into something more bright, and some genuinely entertaining bars from Drake. The unfortunate effect of this track was that it made me super excited to see what else the album had to offer, which essentially led to the feeling of being clickbaited when most of what Drake had to offer was stuff I've heard before in some variation many times.

To wrap this up, while Drake's flows and lyrics are sufficient on this album, the production and instrumentation are mostly solid, and the features are generally enjoyable, to me, CLB feels like the third strike: I can't get excited for a full-length Drake record again knowing that he's perfectly comfortable staying in his own lane and that he will never try to evolve and reach the next level of artistry.
