None of these autotune-using/melodic rappers sound like Kanye on 808s though
It had more to do with how 808s (among other projects) changed the perception of autotune in hip-hop rather than Kanye's actual style within that album.

here’s my theory:
allegedly a rough version of clb was heard by industry acolytes according to ak.
so my theory is: ye got a preview and he heard a diss on a record and it sent him into press ye button mode.
if you look at the timeline , he just ran out quick with full court press of donda.
now my opinion is, if you’re still dissing ye, you deserve everything in terms of response even if it’s petty. you still deserve it. and if you cry about it, you asked for the attention and u got it.
he couldn’t stop subbing ye with his toronto mobfather fantasies.
is it silly for ye to do this as well? yes but he’s not going to be silent. there is no way to maintain civility.
