i think people loved ye because unlike other conscious rappers, he felt relatable. like he was breaking down wealth, materialism, oppression, individualism, racism etc. from the perspective of someone who despite having those positions was in love with fashion, money and fame. he was calling for social change from the perspective of somebody who didn't wanna pay tax
To an extent, you gotta wonder is it that ye is the same person he's always been, but his more conscious side came out when he was spending all day with rhymefest, common, john monopoly and his mom?
Most people have completely hypocritical/conflicting positions but they don't have the spotlight ye does. part of why people loved ye i think was because unlike a lot of celebrities he never refined or resolved his internal conflicts before presenting his identity to the public so he was like most people. now we're maybe seeing the negative side to that.
