I still can’t get over them firing Edgar Wright and then hiring the guy who directed Yes Man to be a literal yes man. lol

And then Edgar went on to make Baby Driver MCU won

    Absolute nadir

Just got word from WB, The snydercut will be restored when this thread can go a day without talking about the MCU

I'm sorry but every DC except Shazam has had "forced" world building hasnt it? Felt like the whole last hour of Snyder cut was setting up more snyderverse that isn't even cooking

And I don't think it's forced when either brand does it since the comics have been doing it for half a century. Endgame was just Altman through a comic lens.

I didn’t care for the epilogue or the inserted MM scene in the middle of the film. I’m not trying to compare DC and Marvel atm either. just airing out my own criticisms towards Marvel’s industrial style of filmmaking.

It’s just hard to see how Edgar’s version of Ant Man wouldn’t have been able to fit into MCU even without the universe building - his style is literally perfect for it. It seemed completely possible during phase one when the MCU was more clunky and Feige was still trying to figure what works for the universe.

But anyways with all my criticisms about Marvel studios I really do hope that they’re able to break free from their formula. We already got Infinity War and Endgame so every film moving forward doesn’t have to plant seeds for the next Avenger film or be restricted by universe building.

  • Mar 26, 2021

Marvel's priority is obviously writing characters and storylines that audience members relate and attach to. People really fall in love with the characters they present on screen. The filmmaking can be "soulless" or lack a director's "touch"...that s*** is all secondary for Feige.

  • Mar 26, 2021

Baby Driver was pretty mediocre, I swear Edgar just took parts of his Ant Man script and reworked it to give us that movie lol

  • Mar 26, 2021

I do s*** for marvel but my contact let’s be free. FYI the DC universe in in good hands. Don’t go by the model that you think or want.

to be fair, while a bulk of their s*** is soulless, I can atleast see the styles of Shane Black, James Gunn and Taiki Waititi in their respective movies

But the thing is even with First Avenger or those earlier marvel movies, it was pretty clear they were being restricted in terms of what they were establishing.

You look at a film like Snyder's Justice League and you literally see Snyder making the kind of huge risks not just with his style and with specific scenes, but with the literal world being established, and no director in the MCU would ever have this level of freedom with Feige running s***

Also do you really think Batfleck is "soulful"? I agree with parts of your third paragraph but nothing there implies there's a moving soul to Snyder's films. they are interesting when you guys start talking about the themes, subtext, iconography etc but there hasn't been a single moment in any DC film "soulful" enough to move me (and I don't mean hallmark emotional manipulation). I'll give it to his vision but his handling of actors (and the quality of these actors tbh, there was a reason I gave Jeremy Irons mvp). Guardians has several moments. Infinity War has several. WandaVision had a few. It's rare but it proves theres a soul cause it usually takes a 50s foreign film or something to move me.

I found multiple scenes in BvS and JL and MOS to be very soulful and more moving than anything in a mcu movie for sure.

That flash scene when he saves Iris is exceptionally beautiful and Cyborg's "I'm not broken" is a beautiful sentiment for a character arc that you would never see either.

Even with Batfleck, him saying he is operating on faith or his speech at the end of BvS when he says he failed Superman in life are beautiful moments. Even him seeing that newspaper saying "you let your family die" has the kind of effect you just don't get in mcu movies.

Can't really say there is even one moment in Guardians and I fw both those movies. I will say the only time a mcu movie ever kinda got me was the ending of Infinity War and even then I saw it as soulless because it was so obvious they were all coming back and the truth is none of the characters that vanish I particularly found compelling as characters because their solo movies were extremely stale. I just liked the serious execution to that scene (same with the intro to Endgame, but again it did not move me because I never gave one f*** about Hawkeye or his family prior either)

What is beautiful about snyders trilogy is that his characters have beautifully realized arcs that are handled with care, not snyder poking fun at them for the audience's sake like we see so often in mcu movies

I'm kinda surprised mcu movies move you then if nothing else does. I find a lot of stuff in 2000s and 2010s films moving (LOTR is like some of the most emotional filmmaking I have ever seen), and the MCU is just straight up soulless imo

The way Batman’s origin story is shown in BvS and seeing it come back during the Martha scene hits me emotionally tbh

I was just about to bring up how Batfleck operating on faith and being the one to form the Justice League as opposed to the cynical, brooding loner in BvS UE was a nice arc that was handled with care, as well as Cyborg's whole character arc in that movie with his relationship with his father was a touching moment as well. Especially Silas' tapes at the end.

Superman reuniting with his mom & Lois was handled nice as well

The cyborg scene was good, maybe it'll hit on rewatch. I don't know why I can't take anything that comes out of Affleck's mouth seriously. Gal is the definition of wooden (as is Brie if honest). Momoa probably only ever gonna emote dudebro vibes although I'm hoping he takes Dune a little more serious.

Idk it takes random stuff. As far as somewhat recent blockbusters Children of Men is distilled shambles for me also these for one reason or another; boxd.it/aHSM6

yeah idk, I actually find a lot of things moving in art, especially with film or anime or music

s*** even that recent ScarJo Ghost in the Shell movie, while not great, I did find the ending scene with ScarJo being hugged to be a beautiful moment.

I didn't rly find Gals WW moving in her own movie, but I fw her character in BvS and JL. I like that shes genuinely presented as a badass who is also compassionate. It makes her extremely heroic. But yeah, Cyborg, Superman, Batfleck, and the Flash all had emotionally powerful moments throughout the trilogy imo.

The MCU movies are just like so soulless and cheap to me. I can look at certain scenes and think they work well but because the context are heroes with generally awful backstories in their solo movies, I can't care about them. I think I dislike most of the MCU heroes tbh. I love spider man from how Raimi portrayed him and I love Miles morales from Spider Verse, but Holland is not my Spider Man. That spidey is a billionaire's slave

Children of Men one of my favs oat

I don’t really care what he does in his personal life and I never even saw the footage of that or anything so it doesn’t register in the moment being created in the film. It’s the ideas of it all. Portraying someone getting that one chance to look in another’s eyes for the millisecond you’ve created. The fact it still made me laugh was wonderful too. It felt sincere and innocent.
