I don't see why they couldn't have made it fully connected to the universe with the sequel lol. Their wasn't a clear cut blueprint to get to Thanos yet.

my boy got to see the virtual premier or whatever, he loved it, he has his criticisms (not really a spoiler but imma spoiler anyway) (he says the third act goes by too fast in comparison to the first two) and that the movie assumes that you know Apokilips, Steppenwolf etc are but he says it's an epic amazing movie and the 4 hr runtime flies by
