GooSome poster whose name I won't mention started snapping at me with paragraphs and s*** trying to create memes. Left me no choice but to go at him with a barely equal amount of toxicity. S muted me for 4 days but I explained to him that I was just defending myself so he lowered it to 2 days.

for any conscious considerations u can make to address someone properly by asking them "what would you like to be addressed as"...it's opening the situation up for them to take offense that you think they look like anything other than male/female/etc.
it's never ending. it's always gonna be room for someone to be pissed off.

But whether or not you should ask that question — specifically in the current social environment — is usually obvious through context isn't it? Being able to avoid situations like the one you describe is a side-effect of people who identify nonbinary telling you their pronouns upfront (they're also extremely common to see in social media profiles recently).
Of course, as i mentioned earlier, there will indeed always be some people who wear their emotions about their identity on their sleeve, and will overreact to someone they've never met or interacted with misgendering them — or in your scenario, binary people getting offended that you were considerate enough to ask them if they had that preference before potentially insulting them. But this isn't the norm (no matter how much constant social media drama makes it seem like it is).
