was genuinely surprised the through the walls (demo) was the most liked track from the PI members on my soundcloud aside from anup's demos. not saying it's a bad track or anything. just wasn't expecting it.

So is Jai Paul ever dropping another album again? Or does he just help his bro run the label and drop occasional singles?

Idk how to feel about it, you're right about the slick production but at times it feels like a winter themed Shadow Knight. The guitar is pretty sick tho

y'all remember what listening to BTSTU and Jasmine felt like in like 2013? I have heard those records so many times that the feeling has faded for me I think. I really miss that. Was thinking about the KTT community today and the real heads who came together online to talk so much about so little music. hope everyone is doing ok these days

I’ll be honest, the Paul’s sound has become way too predictable. We’ve had countless releases with the same 80’s Phil Collins sound and Prince influence to the point where a lot of these records are carrying the same DNA and it’s becoming stagnant. They seem to be really stuck in the past with their sound and even aesthetic choosing cheap looking Papyrus and vintage site layouts. It’s cool and there’s nothing wrong with it but none of their music has really floored me and kept me wanting to come back for too long.

How Bait Ones manages to sound fresh and forward thinking 7 years later is remarkable.

I really hope they can rewrite production and structuring rules in the 20’s like they did with the leak in the 10’s.

I'd say their recent music is pretty different than Jai's original tape. And have you heard A. K.'s Hungry Beat? It's absolutely insane.

Also, it's not Papyrus. it's Herculanum. Entirely different font.

It's fine if you're not into the music but this seems 'stagnant' observation seems a bit flippant. For artists just a few tracks in, all the PI guys have distinct voices and some stellar songs. I get the impression they are just making music they love, I'm not expecting more from any artist than that. For every 80's sound used there's a creative bit of writing or production that clearly comes from each artist. It's a bit disrespectful to say it's all just 'the same 80's Phil Collins sound' just for one or two tracks using a synth swell, when there is clearly more going on. Hypothalamus, Shadow Knight, Hungry Beat come to mind as particularly creative and unique tracks. Same goes for 'He'.

If you're expecting Bait One's sound again I think you're only gonna be disappointed. Probably better off just enjoying it, or listening to it's peers/influences. I always thought Onra's beats must have resonated with Jai, obv DIlla too.

I am definitely not expecting Bait Ones from anyone under the Paul umbrella - even Paul himself. I think the best artist to use that sound and merge it with his own distinct style would be Ben Khan and quite honestly, he's been making some super fresh and innovative music with electronica synths, ambient atmosphere and South Asian classics.

I called their production stagnant because of their obvious low output (which I respect and understand) and generally consistent sound since the inception of the Institute. It seems like in the 5 years since Landcruisin, they've been stuck with that same sound.

I absolutely loved DYLHN & He and I really admired how Jai built on that same foundation and took it up a notch in value. In fact, i'm a fan of majority of their roster's tracks but feel like the replay value isn't there for me year-round.

I think that "Makes No Sense" is probably the most abstract track in terms of sonic layering I've heard from Anup and I'm excited to hear something similar where he's really using his sound design knowledge to his advantage. You can practically feel that amazonia jungle feel in that track.

I'll forever root for these guys, just hoping we get a shake up in sound.

Good to still see you around, I still occasionally bump that track you did with ruthven!
