This album is him trying to force a classic but thats not how classics are born. He following the textbook too much with little that is special

Compare Cole to Cole. This ain't better than FHD or Born Sinner (actually the rapping is better here than on born Sinner)

this album wipes its ass with born sinner lol

@Fam Like i aint gon tell an affected demographic how to feel about verses mentioning said demographic i mean it’s art

But songs like auntie diaries and safety are definitely signs of really huge shifts in hip hop’s progressive politics just off the fact you got 2 of the biggest rappers saying it

I mean, you right. I can't come down on how someone should feel about it. Just trying to offer perspective on the character/person in the song displaying introspection and growth about his view on said lgbtq+ person in the song. In both Kendrick and Cole's case I find it much more progressive than regressive and negative, and I find it hard to look at it any other way, but I'm open to hearing why someone would tho

Thats what I was saying a couple pages ago. You get everything on first listen. Lyrically nothing really moved me like that

  • Album is...definitely a J Cole album. I mean that in a good way. But I'm also not sure what the ten year delay was with it (besides living) because it really is just a Cole album. It's themes/topics I feel like Cole has rapped about plenty of times before, but it's good when it is good.

If nothing else, in terms of his albums, I rank it his third best after FHD and Born Sinner. I did worry that Cole didn't really have enough to warrant two discs, and unfortunately I came out feeling like I was right to worry cause it's some tracks on here...hell nah. And I did find myself feeling like it was getting to be a bit of a slog. Credit to Cole for giving a lil variety and experimenting because it is a long ass album, it's just that those tracks he was experimenting and singing were not what I care to hear from him.

Still, if I skip those tracks and just listen to the ones from both discs that I enjoyed, they're strong enough to make up for those skips.

    7/10 It's Cole being Cole
