close enough by what metric is it just the fact they have 808s hi hats and claps?

Arranged the same with pierre's being faster and using the late 2010's vsts, yes

It's a reason why Pharrell Timbo Mannie even pre Kanye and Bink Roc or Kanye Just and Bink themselves all sound different vs. everyone after Lex Shawty Redd and Sizzle kinda tweaking something from Lex Redd Sizzle formula

we r talking beats not flows or use of auto tune
these r all wildly dif from shawty red or lex or soutshide beats they just are in the lineage of trap/southern beats lol so they have hi hats and 808s

The lack of diversity in flows and approaches is why all beats are devolving to rolling hi hat post 2015 fl studio slop

saying that as nigga who made a beat this week where the hi hats rolled, an 808 was used and in fl studio lol

mannie fresh used southern rap tropes without it being the type of slop most post 2018 beats has devolved to now

we are probably never going back because niggas have been raised off a decade+ of unoriginality lol

they arent even arranged the same lol they just again are in the lineage of a subgenre so it has some hallmarks of it. dif vsts is a big deal lol just cuz the drums have hi hats and 808s doesnt disregard everything else happening in the beat

Lmaoo Kanye himself had some classic songs on those type beats

Drake and Kanye kinda had a huge hand in getting rid of this type of beat too lmao #RapForMFsWhoDontLikeRap

    Oh man he does

I was w my friend the other day and I was telling her if 50 didn't go scorched earth he for sure could've gotten him, banks, buck (would've killed this s***) on that late 2000s runners Khaled miayayo era it would've been f***ing crazy

you can cherry pick songs all day that obviously aren't one of one copies but this is what i mean when I don't know how to further explain to you that people's approaches were just vastly different in the 2000's. or rather the mid to late 2000's is where all this began with Jeezy and NYC rappers tryna match their vibe to that type of beat and flow, but it has completely devolved throughout the 2010's to now where people shamelessly are just one of three or four variations of post WLR or street rapper archetype

That's exactly what I've always felt woulda saved his career

    The Runners/The Olympicks

    Harry Fraud

But yeah once he s*** on Khaled and Ross probably couldn't touch their producers . Lmaoo funny how that worked

Putting Yeezus aside lol This is relatively different but moreso because the tropes of the rolling hi hat serum type beats have been pushed to their limits and they just throwing anything at the wall. this is "different" but as a rap beat i'm not really feeling this. lmaoo compare this to what niggas started out this thread clowning

works as like batman beyond soundtrack or blade runner or tron soundtrack music tho lol

  • i just think it was fresh at a time and then it went out of style. sometimes a style will only sound corny after it's been played out a s*** ton for years. i feel the same about rage music, but the cycle is even quicker with wider internet access. stuff loses its charm and the con is that styles are completely over saturated, the pro is that it makes people innovate to captivate everyone's attention again

  • Smacked Voodoo

I think the bigger reason why a lot of it sounds dated is because it's 15-20 years old.

Not everything from particular eras of music age well. S***, there's music from just 5-10 years ago that have been aging like white people in the sun.

This, I never got why people got so hung up on that

ok faris u dont like it that’s fine but u see how its dif. This is a “rage” beat that can easily be rapped on its so dif mans r saying is this even rap. Citing yeezus would be a thing i GET but also then wed have to cite other things for yeezus and it can kinda go on forever

i promise u im not cherrypicking unless u accept u r aswell, because the thing is people always cite the same peopel for the 00s then cite like a specific section of nowadays or paint it a way but like lets be real here, the 00s also had archetypes as u say.

heres more examples if we r including dif subgenres

If we talk rappers its the hardcore east coast gangsta rap archetype usually in a group (50 cent and G unit, dipset, game as part of g unit adapted to that), the southern trap rapper (boosie, webbie, gucci, jeezy), the backpacker (lupe, kanye, DOOM) and u are talking about an entire decade of music compared to half a decade. Like i bet ur gonna cite ppl that r also in the 90s but had careers bleed into 00s or like late career kanye or something.

When it comes to beats, the thing is the 00s was like all eras of the same prods or beats and those beats still pulled from something, gucci and jeezy at the formation of trap music pulled from a lineage of southern music such as boosie, UGK, 8ball, three6 etc. other than timbo and pharell i could very easily categorize a lot of that stuff as derivative the way u r even if its not, the fact is its a lot more of both very innovative and not so innovative we can pull now because there is just more music to talk about and we are living through it. Also there is just more traditional lineages and formed identities cuz its been 20 years

o yes we will that tune not a classic not even a top 50 cb song

It sounds close enough to Lex and Sizzle

Pierre is great but Compare Shawty Red Lex Southside to Pharrell Timbaland Mannie Fresh

It was supposed to continue in that trajectory of jarringly different styles from what came before and the game just settled on all sounding like Pierre with the fast trap drums and similar type of melodies lol

For what it's worth Pierre and Dro are what derailed rap production to this day permanently for better or worse

I don't blame Pierre, I blame his copycats

  • raps2

    No

Some of Kanye's best songs and moments from this era were made with those type of synthesizers + if everyone went intentionally retro like Kanye Kanye sound wouldn't have been special

People have got to stop trying to make some big brained monday morning quarterback take about s*** from 20 years ago that was perfect for its time lol if everything is avant garde timeless and futuristic then nothing is

well that was the point of the quote tweet. Kanye was "using different synths" i.e. leaning more into the genres that were using those synths at the time

  • Flaphead

It's been said already but the reason this song sounds like s*** is largely due to Swizz Beatz being unreasonably corny, see also Fancy lol

But to the OP's question: I think from a production standpoint, this was a weird time between the bass-heavy southern beats of the early to mid 2000s and the electro house influenced period of the early 10s. It sounds to me more like Swizz was f***ing around on an Electribe or similar with some stock synth sounds and drum samples and layered in a clip of a vocal passed through an EMS 2000 or similar (or any multi band vocoder) and that's about it.

We got really used to tinny, high end heavy mixes at the time with super bass heavy kicks and very little low end on the actual synth bass parts. I remember at the time testing out a subwoofer I s***tily installed in my car using A Milli, then trying out something like Bottoms Up and being sorely disappointed lol.

I'd guess that was part of the reason the 808s/MBDTF/Thank Me Later/Trilogy sound took off so much - it was so much more dynamic than what was on the radio at the time. Hell, it's probably why something like Quintana or Panda sounded like the f***ing future when it first dropped.

pretty good point I'd also say the v. Electro sounding almost techno stuff that still is in rotation, are classics now lol
