To focus on the suffering more than the accomplishments and progress is what is being talked about. For some thinking of the suffering helps them but for most it’s the progress we make despite the suffering

it’s not a choice…I can’t help but think about the stories my grandfather has told me about his life at my same age that was less than 80 years ago

there have been no accomplishments or progress made that have benefited anyone in a significant way but those who were already at an advantage during the times of occupation, enslavement, and apartheid. majority are still poor and struggling to overcome the traumas that are still well and alive in their families.

it’s like telling one of the freedom riders children, who are still alive today, to recognize the progress we have made since they were getting spitted on like the individual spitting on them can’t walk past them and me tomorrow

i didn't do any mental gymnastic lol

    that's how i interpreted it

if you identify with something outside of yourself, you're a victim to it and that's what i got from the slavery is a choice comment

I dont follow your point at all honestly, people are victims of things they have absolutely no control over all around the world its just a material reality no amount of "choosing to not be a victim" internally can change that

Yeah i saw it, i guess i can kinda see what you mean but like you said i think its a bit of a naive stance but i understand

bro im ngl.. it is a choice

no one is holding a gun to your head saying you need to remember those things

as i said in the previous reply, i know it's overly optimistic and naive but i still really do believe you are literally conditioning yourself to stay stuck in the past by remembering those traumatic events

i think it's important to acknowledge that our experiences do define us but so much of our suffering is bc we keep conditioning ourselves to the past. we can create something new. the first step to change is believing we can. we're not going to get anywhere by saying "i can't do this bc of ____ happening in my past"

So I shouldn’t celebrate my Jamaican grandmother being a well known farmer in her area I should focus on her suffering ? You are missing what I’m getting at . Your grandpa is more than his suffering . I’m not saying we are a utopia now I dealt with a hate crime at a job that lead me to poverty

When we were kids we were happy because we challenged ourselves to do anything be willing to fail . Then after being told we can’t or all of the suffering some focused more on the suffering than the accomplishments. I’m not saying racism is over or society isn’t filled with racist people who benefited from slavery

I’m saying if we know reparations aren’t coming we can also honor the past by not living in it

It’s more than choosing not to be a victim it’s doing what we can to not continue cycles

People are still slaves to a system if they don’t question a system and say we have made no progress

  • Laced

To make myself clear. Of course I know that slaves did not get shackled and put on a boat by free will. My point is for us to have stayed in that position even though the numbers were on our side means that we were mentally enslaved.”

I gotta be fair here, he put his foot in his mouth even with his attempt at a rebuttal. He didn’t factor in lack of weaponry, resources, education, or cases of both unsuccessful and successful uprisings during that time. Bad comment to say he was “low key spitting” on, even if there was a greater point trying to be made, which yes, perhaps I could see. Just leave that one alone though aaron lol

no because suffering and the good is what made the whole person who they are today. I can’t not forget his pains just cause his life is better today as he can’t either

Being more than our pain and suffering doesn’t mean we can’t acknowledge that it literally still exists and operate in that mindframe

pretending you’re not starving is not gonna make you stop starving
