This is mostly due to production trends in popular genres getting more percussion and rhythm section focused than harmony (which has allowed hip-hop to become dominant over other genres). Also, as attention spans get shorter and shorter, short and sweet hook melodies become king - there isn't nearly as much space for vocal prowess
Funny that the artist who sells the most albums when they release this century is an old school vocalist tho huh

yup this is the song i would've pointed out. heard it on the radio and was shocked to find out it was her.
even slide, clearly made to be a hit and outside of her usual stuff, but i think it worked better. wouldn't want her to stay in that lane tho, just figure out how to elevate her traditional style of r&b. i'll be checking for her definitely.

It's also important to understand that just because someone isn't singing a slow soul song that doesn't mean they aren't singing their ass off. Take Blinding Lights for example; The Weeknd is giving us a short and sweet Max Martin melody but he's also putting on a stunning vocal performance that relies on skill as much as his unique timbre
