I think Wayne had a love for it at one point (especially learning guitar), but he probably knew he would never get to that level artistically, so he stick to what works best for him, which was spittin.
Which ironically would make him a bad artist, I guess. While Andre continued to perfect a new craft
Damn idk because I’m not an artist. @hadjigaviota What do you think as one?
Has there been a phenomenal rapper to say “I’m not a rapper, I’m an artist”? Just curious
It’s usually people weaker in the technical rapping ability
Did an Andre, Wayne, Black Thought type ever say something like this? My memory is hazy
ASAP rocky
This statement is usually used to differentiatie between the rappers who actually care about music and art vs. Those doing it for clout/money

Yea but thats more on the fans to decide who qualifies then. This is more about rappers who vocally self identify as that and reject their rapper identity
Damn?? I actually don’t remember this. I gotta relisten in the context of i
I had to go out of my way to find this ngl. Had to find some old upload cause its not in the video version or the album version. Its mostly just around in old lyric writeups from when it first dropped. But i did hear it myself although idr where i found it
I asked myself “have any of these great rappers ever said it” and that was really the closest i could get (hov saying im not a rapper im a hustler, drake saying “apparently im a rapper”)

Im the wrong guy to ask i enjoy some songs on rebirth

I see it more as like when producers say im not a beatmaker im a producer, its a meaningless distinction based on ones perception of themselves relative to others, i dont rly think its about anything super deep or controversial like race

the ones who say it all care about money

Yeah on the surface I'm with you. But when I listened to Miles Davis talk about how "jazz" was used as a qualifier to keep black artists down back in his day I saw a lot of parallels. I think there is some internalized racism that comes with acting like being a rapper is "below" being an artist rather than just seeing it as one art form that could be a part of a larger combination of mediums. It's in the way people talk about it
These the same artist that get asked what they are listening to and it’s anything but hip hop
Nah they probably listening to Thug, Future & Drake predominantly tbf

Funny enough all 3 of them are good arguments for branching out sound wise
i think Eminem plays a role too
he’s still a great rapper, from a technical standpoint, but his (recent) albums don’t sound good
does this make him a bad artist? no. he’s great at his craft, which is rapping.
but this distinction did confuse a lot of people who also noticed they liked Kanye’s albums but didn’t think he was great at rapping.
all in all, the term is incorrectly used most of the time

I wish I got more into this aspect of it in the video because it is fascinating
it's true that some very talented rappers can't make good songs to save their lives (or in Em's case, can't anymore)
but also I think there are parallels to some classically trained musicians who make boring ass music in other genres too
might end up being an argument that rapping is even more like playing an instrument than we first thought

You got it twisted
The ones who actually care about the art and art form don’t have a problem calling themselves rappers because they know a rapper IS an artist

Some part of this is also you either got it or you don't. Like back when quentin miller was dropping music and no one was listening despite being a good songwriter.
I think it’s the weakest thing a rapper could say
Especially when all they do is just make commercially pleasing music for the casuals and now they think they are "artists". It's pretty insulting to the musical artists who are not affraid to try out new and unique sounds and break the barrier even though it don't get popularized by the masses
That one fat ass thinks he is an artist because he made some radio hits but the listeners don't know his name at all. They can just sing the hook because it gets overplayed and catchy, and they have no idea who is behind the songs. They don't even sing his verses because it is just noise to them
Pop rap is all it is and there is nothing wrong with making that. Just stop being delusion and think you're some A-tier artist now because you blended rap with country

I feel like that's more about presentation than it is about anything else
I can tell you in 2015/2016 I was listening to Quentin / Wedding CRSHRS but yeah you're right he needed better promo and a story to sell

It's actually comical that he said that in the interview and then just got on there and rapped the whole album. It's not even that it's bad it's just that you said "I need to do more than rap" when all he does is rap on it! Which is fine! Unless you say that!
Just list out the people who said “I’m not a rapper I’m an artist” and you’ll see why it’s goofy as hell
