I live in AZ for most the year, CA Bay for part.

I live like a king in AZ and since i live right outside phx, another major city (and in terms of sheer built size its the 3rd biggest in the country) i still get the city life but way way less expensive & less hectic.

Find a new place to live. There is so much land and opposite out there in 90 percent of the rest of the countey especially if you take your job, talent and money from your more exuberant living city/state.

There is more out there without living in a dystopian off of an exaggerated "importance" idea and image of the place that doesnt exist anymore since 20 to 30 years ago.

If you work a decent mainstream easily to account for job and arent an independent/niche worker or small/local personal business owner then there is no excuse that you should be sweating retirement this bad honestly.
