he was talking about how Basquiat's art looked visually rough because he was in pain yet expressed himself as a king/god etc. despite being held down by racism. Ye then proceeds to bounce off that and wants his art to be clean, celebrating nature, japan-like, alien-like, Ernesto Neto-like. He seemed to be wanting to flip the idea that an artist (Basquiat as an example) is essentially saying 'buy my pain'

It's a nice thought exercise but Ye doesn't stick by it, less than a year later he was turning away mixes for Follow God because he wanted it to sound dirtier, and in general their philosophies on life were very different, it comes off more Jay-Z Halloween outfit than anything imo

I was at a museum in Amsterdam at a really pretty renovated old building recently and there was an exhibit with Basquiat, Warhol, Haring and... Banksy & Damien Hirst, and I had some thoughts about it all too that weren't quite on the same wavelength as Ye, but rather the unintentional dissonance between putting the first group of people in that building with the second, and putting them in that building to be photographed for Instagram at all, it is nice to hear those discussions being had though
