  • Instead of writing some insanely long piece on every reason social media is bad i want to focus on the way it forces everyone to essentially be their own personal brand

Take science for instance, with tools like linkedin and twitter theres a newfound need to promote your work online instead of just publishing in a top tier journal no one reads

This means your job includes social media prescence, which obfuscates interesting work done by those with no interest in social media and promotes people who focus on this superficial act of self promotion

Same with music, now artists are evaluated by their ability to get attention instead of focusing on the artform

This leads to an enshittification of all aspects of culture. The forerunners are not the best but the loudest. People acquiese and now everyone is racing to have the loudest voice in a room full of useless noise. Progress and productivity are diminished and popularity becomes the primary attribute for success. Those who are the nost entertaining thrive and the very baseline for entertainment diminishes i.e. meme culture

At this rate society will crumble due to the sheer noise of online spaces that replace all other venues of information transfer. We will regress in every aspect of what made humanity powerful. Ultimately humans became successful because we work together, but now your common man is your worst enemy in an overcrowded room of people vying for the top spot as the most annoying i mean most popular person

The reality is as industrialization and automation progress the need for humans is diminished. This leads to a problem of overpopulation, where people cant survive NOT because of a lack of resources but because of a lack of value

In an economic system where personal value is everything it becomes impossible for most people to attain enough status and wealth to survive. Until we find a better way to allocate resources we will increasingly find thst society decays. I also argue that in general 8 billion humans is not sustainable for many generations

  • Beautiful post I hope it all dies out and I’m glad I don’t have any

My daughter won’t have it (would rather her be a happy person) and hopefully it won’t be around by the time she is of age.

Sorry to burst your bubble but this is actually just another development of capitalism, just applied to the new social vehicle of digital media and algorithmic content

Quite. Capitalism is the system that destroyed societies for centuries. Social media is simply a vehicle who’s consequences are not inherent to its character

Negative, but thinking that answer is a final indictment on social media is shortsighted and reactionary

Would social media exist under other economic systems? And if so which system could produce positive use?

Social media would be an inevitability in any system experiencing the digital revolution

What it would look like is a massive hypothetical than could only be observed in practice

Id argue social media would always result in a similar dynamic of clout chasing regardless of economic system altho the impacts might be lessened

What do u suggest we should replace capitalism with
