Just wanted to circle back and say that I definitely understand his popularity/success objectively. That demographic he tapped into is in love with him.
I just don’t understand this monumental impact where I see even some of y’all treat bro like a god. He’s s***ty to his fans and I’ve never heard a Frank song that REALLY sounded like it took years to make.
The PARTY comparison was pretty demonic, but I was referencing the similarity in how they move almost. Neither loves their fans or dropping music lmao.
Because Blonde tapped into a very popular aesthetic / scene (vapid fake-deep male art hoe) and did it very well
I think it's s***e but its popularity is no mystery
Or ya know, the music is good and people like it.
Not everybody lives in LA and lives within the bounds of “scenes” lmao
I think he and his image way back when, tapped into and captured the value of image and aesthetic and it’s carried him to where he is today
That is not to say that the music isn’t good, but he drops so infrequently and is not at all a hit maker so even if you take away own personal opinion, him headlining Coachella in 2023 speaks volumes about what is perception is as an artist, and that isn’t nothing
There’s certain artist that, whether it be through interviews, artwork, iconography, etc create an allure about them and their work, and make it such that ppl feel like they have to say they like and listen to said act in order to not be perceived as dumb or having an uncultured musical palette
Frank is in that category to me
I see what you’re getting at OP.
Although I do believe Blonde and Channel Orange are timeless and incredible LP’s in their own right, it’s been a long time since Blonde dropped. Lots of artists have dropped classics long ago and we do not talk about em with the same energy we discuss Frank. It’s still too early with Frank but his contemporary cultural credit is approaching (although not nearing) maxed out
Please don’t lock as this is not bait. I genuinely do not understand why he’s rated so highly. What is his impact culturally or musically? Blonde is a cool album. Channel orange, another cool album.
Outside of this, what makes him so special? I don’t see how he isn’t regarded to be in a similar lane as PARTYNEXTDOOR (who I love) where he clearly has a lot of talent, but hasn’t made a large enough impact despite that talent. Neither really drops music or has a presence anywhere, outside of music.
okay soma
who do you think warrants that kind of attention that is currently living?
Unfortunately the way pop culture works you can’t dial down. Now you have to replace him with someone who is going to generate that kind of interest & fascination.
it isn’t easy and that’s why Frank has the top billing spot at coachella - right or wrong
Ive never said this unironically but if you think frank has no impact you need to go outside lmao
You can tell a frank ocean fan by looking at them and hella musicians are influenced by him
You have two artists. One whom embraces the glitz and glamour and puts on a spectacle of a show with a setlist of songs everyone from your grandma to your niece would know.
The other who takes the opportunity of headlining the world’s biggest festival, and completely throws it away. Maybe it’s his indecisiveness, maybe it’s the depression of losing his brother, but he completely and utterly bombs in a beautiful fashion.
Some people prefer the first artist. I personally prefer The second.
Lol
Lol
I’m not even being ironic though. I live in a house where every person in it is a Weeknd Stan and I just prefer Frank with all of his damning quirks
Because he's one of the few musicians who actually put thought and effort into his art today.
Shame on you @op

the art which he hasn’t updated in 7 years
Read PND's lyrics. Read The Weeknd's lyrics. S***, go read any lyrics from any popular R&B, alt R&B, or R&B adjacent genre artist.
Then go read Frank's lyrics. More vivid storytelling. Writes in a style that calls back memories like flipping through old pics/clips through a projector (particularly on Blonde and Endless), and uses production to match the nostalgia; of loss, drifting away from people, ego, love, desire. And lowkey he'll even make jokes about it all (Nikes is downright hilarious, and lonesome, and speaks through blips like a twitter feed).
Idk. It's niche, but it's huge. All art isn't for all people, and that's fine. But I do believe, if you're into songwriting, and don't see why he is revered, then spend more time with it.
