This is my take.

Thug wasn't considered a star until guys like Lil Baby & Gunna came up. Before that he tried stunt after stunt to get on but never reached star status and most of his prepared albums flopped and they branded them as mixtapes.

Once the Lil Baby's, and the Gunna's blew up, that plus other minor factors made people praise Thug as influential and ultimately made his debut album successful.

And who gave those two a career?
