You need to cancel fear out of your body and try to keep both of them on the same side. The most important pattern to recognize is when one summons the aoe on the floor.

i noticed pretty quickly that they can't hit you when you stick to the top end of a wall on the side

i just continuosly pogo'd on them after their big jump attack and glued myself to the wall again

There's more platforming in Silksong, but Hornet has so many more moves than the Knight—and can heal in the air!—that I find Hollow Knight less forgiving, yes.
