The fire protection charm does wonders tho

Also having 2 tools with the poison artifact u can rack up so much damage that way. I had the spear and the spikey trap

I know people love this franchise but for somebody who never played Hollow Knight: What's so special about this game? Looking at footage I'm just seeing another indie 2D platformer which there's plenty of.

have you played any metroidvanias? They aren’t normal platformers, that’s why they’re a specific genre, Metroid changed the normal formula. There’s no levels really and no clear way to go, it’s like youre lost in a giant maze. You gotta figure out the world for yourself with no handholding or directions.

In terms of what makes HK special it’s hard to say exactly, it’s everything. The atmosphere, the lore, the art style, the music, and specifically for silksong the movement and combat are more fluid and satisfying than any metroidvania I’ve played.

I played a lil’ bit of Metroid Dread but I wasn’t feeling it tbh. I also played two 2D platform indie games that I actually ended up appreciating a few years ago - Celeste and Steamworld Dig 2. Don’t know if they count as Metroidvania though.

Not Celeste, more of a challenging 2d plataformer. But Steamworld Dig 2 (goated game) yep

If you don’t like Metroid dread it’s likely you won’t like this.

Celeste isnt because there’s no big world to explore, it’s a bunch of levels you choose from a menu.

Steamworld dig 2 actually is a metroidvania and it’s great, Im surprised you didn’t like dread.

As someone who’s played a ton of metroidvanias after the boom (mainly indie ones) HK really makes you see how effortlessly well they do everything to the point where you don’t realize how good you have it. The map design/traversal is Nintendo levels of polish (silk song is them outdoing Nintendo lowk) where you can literally go any direction and find something worthwhile and even the detours feel like you’re making crazy progression. Some sections of the map are annoying to go back to with how they’re not near any shortcuts but for the most part the way they connected this maze of a map is insane.

Just the moment to moment of finding a new area, having to fill in your map, the relief of a bench, trying to farm your way to have enough to heal all feel soooo good

I see. I think I’m generally not that into 2D platformers/2D Metroidvania. There are some exceptions like SteamWorld Dig 2 but as a whole I tend to get bored of them pretty quickly.

Thanks for the tip, but Silksong is actually hella cheap to my surprise so I won’t be losing much if I decide to give it a go at some point. I prefer the art style/atmosphere in Silksong over Prince of Persia so if I get in the mood to check out the silky knight then 20 bucks won’t hurt even if I end up hating it lol.

Celeste is another one of those games where it literally puts the entire genre to shame even Mario :kevinwd2:
