I was otw to the airport when my agent called and said they might hire me. I was like “sure” because I’d had a false alarm situation with “Search Party” which I thought I’d join (Arrested Development is my favorite show, and the star was in AD)

I landed and then my agent said The Simpsons wanted me to start tomorrow. I’d never watched the show before. Obviously I’m familiar with it as a cultural artifact, but I binged some episodes (older and newer) and then went back to LA to start

People give it a bad rap but the jokes are excellent in recent years. The stories maybe could be better. The room is full of pros. It’s really not as bad as people say

Yes I was also making goo gobs of money. Like $30,000 per month. And that didn’t include black-ish residuals I got from my “Super Rich Kids” (season 2, episode 23 I believe) episode

I’d write for any show. It’s very fun. Some more fun than others. But I truly believe it’s the best job in the world. Or top 3. And the ones I’d put above it are very esoteric. Like being Elon Musk or Jeff Bezos. Or s*** Hasan has a great job. Or being Drake

Yeah. We talked. I can’t remember what about. All these people are so normal. I saw Drake like 2 weeks ago and he hadn’t seen me in a while and was surprised and we talked. All these people are pretty normal. Every now and then someone is a diva but mostly they’re normal. Imagine if your friend who raps or acts became as big as Drake or Ye or a big actor. They’d still be that same person you knew

Man! I also had a meeting with Bojack Horseman. I loved that show. Was bummed I didn’t get on it. By the time you’re having a meeting, I feel like the job is yours to lose

I don’t really watch TV (aside from Dateline) and there are very few shows I like. I’ll rewatch Arrested Development before I watch a new show 9 times out of 10. So the fact I loved Bojack and met with them and didn’t get it was annoying

And yeah Search Party, my agent made it sound like it was a done deal

Yeah people think because you write for TV you’re gonna watch a ton. I hadn’t watched blackish before my agent told me they were interested. I was also very young and not the target demo. I didn’t watch the simpsons growing up

I remember the episode of blackish I’m credited with (people usually say “my episode of X” but I don’t like that phrasing because it’s such a collaborative effort), one of the early suggestions for this guest star white character was Will Arnett and I was so geeked cuz I love Arrested so much.

Arrested Development, Girls, Bojack… might be the only comedies I’ve watched (in the past 5 - 8 years). Before that, The Office of course. And Parks. But even those kind of feel ancient and dated now

No. Simpsons is a very chill writers room. Amazing place. But also no one needs those rules. If you’re in the room, the show runner / head writer liked your writing. And every character is pretty well defined. Like obviously I wouldn’t have Mr. Burns donate to charity or have Lisa burn fossil fuels

No. Meeting celebrities especially in social settings is overrated. I would much prefer to meet them the way I met KD, because we are working on a project together

I’ve become an enormous Durk fan in the past 18 months so I would like to meet him. I was pretty close with Fredo Santana. But Durk I would be cautious meeting him because of his beefs. You don’t want to be near a target

I had a brief Coi Leray phase. Meeting her would be cool. I’m a huge Paul Simon fan and would love to meet him. Clairo’s music makes me think she’d be interesting

I was very geeked to meet Drake but eventually we became like acquaintances so I couldn’t really be a fan anymore or it would be weird. We don’t have any pics together since early 2018 and it’s not because I haven’t seen him, it’s because asking for pics is cringe
