How would y'all divide up Drake's career? Just into old and new Drake?
To me there are 3 distinct Drake eras:
1. SFG - WATTBA
Well liked by critics while coming up and rising to the top
2. Views - Scorpion
Cementing his status, setting records and still many hits but the critics start to hate
3. DLDT - now
Both casuals and critics start to hate even more and the negativity starts to take over
more than 3 eras for sure
Room for Improvement, Comeback Season, basically 2006 until Ransom comes out - Rookie Drake, the Drake that bleeds his influences the most, lots of clear inspiration from people like Little Brother, Jay-Z, Joe Budden, and Wayne, beefing with local rappers like Aristo and going in on him, with the song Goodnight and Good Luck.

So Far Gone into the greater Young Money Era (Drizzy Drake)

SFG is what some call his seminal work, more wayne influence, more high level features, forever with Em, Wayne, and Ye, the We Are Young Money album, feature run, Thank Me Later. You can argue he sold out in this era but it worked. Find Your Love, Best I Ever Had, Over, he was putting on for Young Money in Wayne's absence.
Take Care - NWTS eras - full pop star / rap star status, Marvins Room, this is when Drake came into his own and stamped the game in a unique way. and despite being a singing nigga, he started to get a real Feel for flowing on trap beats, as shown by cuts like the Tony Montana remix, Versace remix, and Worst Behavior.

2015 - 6 God era
Back to Back cut Meek's head off. WATTBA with Future, certified street classic. IYRTITL, one of his best works, he just proved to his haters that he could be one of the most effective Rappers when push comes to shove in a battle context, and still light the streets up.

Late 2015-2018
The Ubiquitous Drake / Mr. Worldwide

Drake at his most mainstream and marketable, dominating every format: radio, streaming, Super Bowl Commercials, memes, the club. Hits like One Dance, Work, Controlla, Hotline Bling, and the overall impact of Views. Drake was everywhere, and to an extent, that made people eager to see him fall.

so when Drake got exposed for hiding a child, it was the internet's turn to have a laugh at his expense. Scorpion still had smash hits but it marked a clear shift in how the world saw Drake.
2019- 2022
the Man becomes the Machine
Drake essentially gave up trying to please the critics and became the most toxic, unrepentant, and honestly, probably the most Numbers focused we ever saw him in his mainstream career. Drake knowing he can stop the world when he drops music, even if it is made with minimal effort. You can argue that he's not even emotionally present in most of this era's music, but to be honest, do we even care?

Late 2022 - 2024
Wick Man Era

Her Loss, f***ing crazy. Top tier flows, high level lyrics when he was tapped in off the Adderall, songwriting was in a unique space, Hours In Silence, Treacherous Twins, and Spin Bout U showed Drake trying not to make hits fr, but trying to impress himself in the studio.
and For All The Dogs... a mixed bag. I enjoy it but know it's not for everyone. You get every past version of Drake on here, but I feel like he really wanted to make an R&B album. cuts like Bahamas Promises, Tried Our Best, Polar Opposites, and Drew A Picasso are Drake locked in. "Dialed In" as he would say. n a production tip, Everything blends together so perfectly, and in a sense, it's a great reminder of who Drake once was as a singer.

2024-2025
Post Kendrick / Crisis of Confidence era

We are still here, so we can't say much. but you could argue that Drake is wrestling with his legacy, trying to get lit, or at times introspective while feeling publicly stung by NLU.

Songs like No Face, Blue Green Red, SOD, and Circadian Rhythm at first were Drake trying to brush the beef off, but when you hear a song like What Did I Miss or Gimme A Hug you can see that Drake is clearly bothered by the tonal shift.

$$$4U was a great R&B album by him and PND, but the rap side of Drake is clearly not content with making great music if he doesn't have the Crown. and so in the words of a certain mc in 2018:
How Do You Respond?

I think you could separate the Her Loss/FATD era from these. During FATD is when the negativity really took off to where it is today imo
This a anthem for a whole new generation of kids
oldheads were in there feelings when this dropped
"wait this nigga actually going for the throne !!??"

Facts, the amount of s*** Drake was getting for being too sensitive around Take Care was wild.

They been hating since 2010. And then some people have the audacity to say that critics loved him at this time.

It's funny people keep saying he should go back to being who he was in this era as that was the "mature" version of himself, forgetting how they never gave him any credit during that actual period of his career and we're still mocking him/ridiculing everything he did.

Literally, the norm was making any type of meme with him.

Exactly. How that he's let loose and is having fun with his music, it's constant complaints about him not being "mature" in his music smh.
