  • Tell Gunn we need a Hal Jordan prequel game

  • The mom being the truly crazy one caught me by surprise

  • Favorite part of this episode is when they both say “hmm” after talking about Hal’s actions

Ep 3 was directed by stephen Williams, who also directed the hooded justice/Tulsa episode of watchmen

I mean Watchmen and Leftovers. Leftovers better than Watchmen but if still in hero mood Watchmen is great besides finale

the whole "they dont see us cuz we're black in America" theme fell kinda flat for me

would have landed better if John Stewart's family was impoverished and that could have informed their outlook. but instead his family looked cushy upper-middle class with a big ass house and with his dad being a Marine makes the whole thing comes off as forced commentary.

i also didn't quite understand his mom's obsession with raising him to be a Lantern. like to what end? both his parents seem absolutely insane and i hope they explore the psychological impact of that on John. they robbed a kid of his childhood to get him to potentially become a GL. but based on his last interaction with his mom this episode, I feel like they won't go down that road.

Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre together really carry this show. most of the episode felt boring but the minute Chandler was back on screen, its like show got all its life back.

I also think my issue more lies with the delivery (by the mother) of some of the lines about black people which adds to the heavy handedness of it all. did not really enjoy her performance that much. it don't help that she light skinned too

Her lines were didactic, funnelled into general talking points. Distilled without being distinct. Now, I don't necessarily associate that with bad writing all the time because there are points to be made and her character having those convictions does make sense.

It is jarring though, to gear shift like that in a show that dabbles in the unspoken just as much as it does in the things it states clearly to the viewer. Like why do we suddenly strip that away because it's a Black family on screen lol

It felt like how an ai black person would talk to an alien lol

I love approaching race in hero content to ground it in our reality. Show all of those issues still exist but telling a literal alien in hiding "even you dont think of blackness " is doing the absolute MOST.

since this is airing, I'm rewatching the Watchmen show, and damn I had kinda forgotten how fire that s*** was!!!

tbh it is almost preventing me from appreciating this Lanterns show cuz I keep comparing the two: the first three episodes of Watchmen are so much better than this one's first three

but it's Lindelof so I have faith he'll come thru in the end

lindelof was more in control / showrunning watchmen. This showrunning and control is only so much on lindelof. Ozark guy is showrunner. More chefs in the kitchen. But yeah I agree overall I got Watchmen way over this personally

Issues affect rich and poor people of color, the point is that because they are middle income, it makes them no different.

Don’t have to be poor or rich, in the end it’s a struggle
