While the commentary was somewhat heavy handed, I think people are taking john mom too at face value. She right that the guardians test was imperfect and doesn't take account of earth dynamics but she was talking out of her ass about the ring choosing hal because he's privileged and im sure the show will go into it more what Hal had to overcome to be chosen.

A lot of her actions and words in this episode and her turning into Joe Jackson was just her overcompenstating for not believing her husband which led him to spiral. She felt this was the only way to make things right

  • Very relatable episode if you're Black and grew up with strict parents.

Favorite part about this episode was seeing that both of John's parents are still alive. You'd think that he would've faced some sort of tragedy. That he grew up having some sort of mommy or daddy issues, or abandonment issues. Nah. He just grew up with strict ass parents that taught him early on that as a Black person you gotta work twice as hard to get half as much as a white person. That we aren't afforded the same kinda privileges as white people.

We see that John does have a bit of resentment towards Hal, but it comes from a place of him being confident and believing, or just outright knowing that he is better than Hal. Something that Hal also possibly believes as well deep down as he shows a bit of awareness and animosity that the Guardians are giving him a back up to potentially replace him.

I dont remember the quick story Hal gave on the football field. His dad killed the alien or found it after it crashed? Something like that

Her lecturing an alien about knowledge of blackness and racism when racism are alien concepts in themselves. Logically most children are taught these systems. These systems are crazy to have in any way .

Specifically the dynamics of racism in the US at that. Fear specifically is interesting though, they know enough about humans to assume it's something we all fundamentally feel

Nah separate incidents, his dad was pilot that died from a crash when he was young

We just saw an alien know nothing about Obama or harry potter. They dont know our culture like that. Its why they choose a human . They just care about fear or not. She could have delved into how naturally white men have less to fear than black men in reality in a less heavy handed way. While also claiming to be afraid of us.

Also kinda interesting that the ring actually did chose a black man first instead of hal

In regards to comic lore, Hal only gets the ring because Abin-Sur was dying and it was an emergency to keep the ring from falling into the wrong hands. He didn't really earn it. He was just at the right place at the right time. He would have to prove to others in the Corp that he was worthy of the ring, and he does.

He didn't get the ring due to privilege, but due to circumstance. But, from the outside looking in, the Stewart family's perspective, it seems like Hal didn't deserve it and that John Stewart Sr was cheated out of it.

He wasnt afraid of anything on earth but he feared the unknown. He had a little bit of fear of his son abilities but so did his mom who put his father in the gunfire and never herself until her son asked her to

Yeah hal probably considered a wrecking ball to the Stewart family. First the ring thing and then getting John discharged

Not that i know of, that was just his origin. In comic it was supposed to be Hal or Guy but Hal was closer, dont know if theyll take that same storyline tho

I think he also afraid of what will happen to his fam. Hal made a comment in episode 1 about how he's fearless because he has nothing to lose. John Sr had something to lose

    mom the whole episode

Why are people acting oblivious to abuse in military families? Even from my own experience you will be “handled” a certain way raised in one, especially if the woman in the family worship the traditions

The wife not wanting him to fear anything when he has a wife and kids also feels a bit much lol. I need to rewatch all 3 episodes but to me the idea of "you could be the first black space cop" isnt the sell to me. But they already a military family. I just need a bit more of questioning of authority be it the lanterns, police or military. Them being that subservient to authority while her being blackity black just doesn't align in my brain.

so we are supposed to jump to she was abused by john senior so she is like this ? I dont think that would be a good angle either lol.

Funny thing is it's not just the Stewart family that Hal unintentionally screwed over lol initially the power ring was meant for Guy Gardner after John Stewart Sr failed. But because Abin-Sur was attacked, he had to give his ring to Hal before dying. Making Hal Earth's first Green Lantern. Something that Guy was bitter about and hates Hal for.

Guy was more of the privileged pick, whereas Hal was the circumstantial pick.

She doesn’t even have to be abused by him, moreso anything to maintain their family/commitment to each other. And the easiest way to go about that is through John

He’s saying that Military Wives that really value their position raise their children rigorously/abusive to ensure their toughness, not claiming spousal abuse I think

Why did the first episode kinda give the impression that the mom was dead or otherwise out of the picture? And the Dad seemed so much more rigid and uncaring in the first ep as well.

thought John was about to accidentally kill his mom

Precisely, you see less of it in today’s generation but back then it would carry much more prestige for them
