Y’all thought I was gonna leave like that?
I’m back with another one and I got to make up for the lack of GemStones content in Women’s History Month. And I had to show some love to this beautiful Norwegian woman that I had my ear to for a while
Hailing from Norway. Having a strong passion for music since childhood, the Eritrean songstress kept building her craft. A dedication that caught the attention of Norwegian record label, daWorks Record in the early 2000s. Winta dropped her first single, “Emotions,” in 2002. Eventually, her debut album, First in May 2004, had moderate success. She would then take a 7-year hiatus, where she released a second studio album titled My Life with success. The last project she would release for the time being.
I hate that she took a hiatus because she is honestly a true talent. Her voice is as if Aaliyah, Tweet, and Tyra B had a baby. However, it’s with an East African flavor and an international/European sensibility. I often find it interesting how Winta bleeds those influences into her soundscapes whether it’s the catchy melodies or hearing an altered krar or masenqo being played, which somewhat recalls late 90s/early 00s Timbaland with songs such as “Emotions,” “Hot Romance,” and “I Want U.”
She is clearly a lover of R&B as she says in “I Want U”:
“Hey pretty boy, tell me what is your name
Is it something like Devante (Swing),
Cause you’re fitting like D’Angelo
My eyes can’t stop staring
Cause you gotta be like Tyrone”
– Winta
Tyrone clearly being an Erykah Badu reference too lol. Plus, the way she layers her vocals is simply enchanting. It’s sultry yet breezy. My favorite songs from her — “My Number One” and “Broken Hearts” — all show her ability to cast you under a spell that keeps you in a trance. Like injerra with tsebhi - her sound melts you with flavor but calms you in the process.
I know I've been busy lately with NYC Tastemaker but I still ain’t going nowhere. I ain’t forgot about ya'll - but I have been hearing in these KTT2 streets that I have Chat GPT write for me
This all me round here. Nothing fake or ghostwritten about my s***. That's on everything
