Zionism was founded by a guy named Herzl, who wanted to start a state for Jewish people as he believed it was the only way to ensure safety. He had many places in mind in where this state could be made, but ultimately decided on Palestine. He recognized Palestine as a state, and recognized that there were Palestinians living there, and recognized that in order to make their state, violence would have to take place.

Now his views of Zionism were not as extreme as they came to be after he died. After he died, the rhetoric became much more extreme, to the point where it is impossible to not view it as Zionists simply hating Palestinians, and wanting to take over their land. The movement was fueled by hate, and with the support of Britain it was really a colonial endeavor fueled with hate, it lost its original meaning of trying to achieve a peaceful state for Jewish people who faced oppression. Instead it became a movement fueled by propaganda, hate, and racism towards Palestinians and Arabs.
