Asked a friend who I don't see often what their take on the ongoing and historical conflict and they said something i mostly agree with?

But I'm wondering if opinions itt differ strongly from this

"Israel and US killed way more civilians than Palestinians have historically and currently...
Hamas sucks as leadership for Palestinians and their massacre was horrible...
Israel has covertly supported Hamas so they can claim they have no partner for peace...
Incursion into Gaza will only breed more martyrs and will be worse for Israel long term...
I think there's some evidence Jews have always lived in Israel Palestine but obvi millions of European Jews settled there 20th century...
Jews deserve a homeland and Israel isn't going anywhere but obvi Palestinians got ethnically displaced/ cleansed...
There needs to be some land back and a state of Palestine...
And yet I'm a descendant of settlers and have wealth through genocide"

I know this thread is mostly being used for consistent updates but I'm wondering if the above is flawed and if so, someone or some people could shed light on why?

I think the most problematic elements of that is the notion of an ethno-state itself and what it requires to be created

Also there will be differing takes on Hamas and the degree to which they're justified, some might say Israel brought this on themselves by occupying and brutalizing Palestinians for so long, some might say any innocent deaths caused by you thereby make you wrong in your cause, I would be surprised to see people consider them a good government though, outside of all of that...

All in all those seem like pretty normal takes and that they did actually put some effort into learning about the issue, whether I agree with each one or not

I do feel like people who behave as though they have the solution for this (i.e. a diplomatic solution that does justice to either group) are purely speculating, unless there's historical precedent that could really help with this situation...?

An argument I hear parroted/said often in regards the homeland take

Which I do kind of agree with, though?

    "Jews deserve a homeland"

I am in alignment that Israel shouldn't be a Palestine replacement, but the idea of a homeland does seem somewhat valid? But I'm not a historian

I guess it's sometimes hard to disentangle anti-Zionist sentiments when they can border on anti semitisim in my mind. But knowing that modern day Israel is fundamentally us funded and colonial in nature doesn't sit well with me? I'm not trying to be "the guy who's just asking questions" but I also am just wrestling internally with this whole thing (Woe is me)

Do you support a two state solution? Do you think such a thing is possible at this stage?

As far as the homeland thing, I think ideally both groups should be able to live there,

but at the expense of life that there has been since the 40s, it makes that prospect seem increasingly far away,

then it becomes "Who gets it?" All or nothing takes on it, or two state solution...

I think legitimizing Palestine and with statehood and international protection would be clearly better than that of Gaza today, but there is so much loss that still remains, and that also could be seen as still legitimizing Israel's existence in the same form and capability that it was when it began the occupation and the response to oct 7, which is unacceptable for a lot of people, understandably

Personally I am at a loss to even try to predict what happens after this...

Whatever it is it'll never be enough, that void can't be filled, it'll just make a really big scar if its left alone

The framing of it as a war differs from the framing of it as a genocide it makes you think of the issue differently

Any optimism from these upcoming Saudi Arabia Gaza summits?

I know Arab countries aren't a monolith, but it's kinda wild countries like Columbia and Bolivia have been more proactive condemning Israel.

I don't think people realise how close Israel and Sunni Arab countries have become in the last few years. They've signed normalization treaties with four Arab countries and Saudi Arabia will be next. The Sunni countries really despise Iran and it's extremist proxies like Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis. Long term, the Saudi normalization deal will involve Israeli concessions to the Palestinians, possibly a pathway to two states.

I kind of agree except that some form of retaliation was warranted but they have overdone it now.

I wonder where was this energy when USA was bombing the snot out of afghanistan after 9/11 though? Im sure if anyone was keeping track the civilian death count would have been quite high but dont remember there being much outrage

people do recognize now that the invasions of iraq and afghanistan were abhorrent, and there were anti war protests back then but yeah nowhere near as close as now.

tbh if social media was around back then we would’ve seen the same reckoning and protests across the us and around the world
